5 Incredible Women Investing in the NWSL

The tides are changing in the NWSL! Women are obviously the face of the league, but more and more women are now becoming the face of team ownership. I have to say; it’s long overdue. Be still my feminist heart!

While the NWSL still has plenty of room for growth in the women-leadership department, some incredible women have committed to investing in the league. It makes all the difference in the world for strong women to place a stake in the sport that women have fought hard to be a part of. Here are a few phenomenal women investing in the NWSL:

Serena Williams

Angel City FC has quickly made itself known in the NWSL with its female-stacked ownership group. Tennis powerhouse Serena Williams is just one of the amazing women invested in the club.

Williams’ husband and their daughter Olympia are also investors, along with a long list of well-known names like Natalie Portman, Abby Wambach, Eva Longoria, Julie Foudy, Jennifer Garner, and so many more. Of course, Serena Williams is a huge name and influencer within the world of athletics, so having her added to the list of investors definitely doesn’t hurt!

Naomi Osaka

It’s nice to see athletes supporting athletes across all sports, and Naomi Osaka buying in to support the NC Courage is awesome. Not only is she one of the best tennis players in the world, but she has heavily advocated prioritizing mental health, especially as an athlete.

Osaka credited the women who “invested” in her and the love she has received from fellow female athletes as her reasoning behind investing in the club. It’s very encouraging to see a young female athlete playing a part in continuing the growth of female sports!

Chelsea Clinton

The Washington Spirit is heading in a great direction. The club is now officially majority-owned by a woman (yay Michele Kang!), and they have the current highest-paid player in the NWSL (looking at you, Trinity Rodman).

Considering that the club is based in D.C., it’s fitting that they have found their place within the political atmosphere having Chelsea Clinton aboard as an investor. Fellow former presidential daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, also bought a stake in the club’s ownership. The D.C. love is real!

Brittany Matthews

Brittany Matthews, the fiancee to Kansas City football star Patrick Mahomes, is making waves as part-owner of the KC Current. Matthews is no stranger to the sport; she played soccer at the collegiate level and spent one year playing professionally.

Now, she is investing in her love of the game to continue growing the league through the recent rebranding of the team. The KC Current didn’t just get an upgrade in look; the team is on track to be the first NWSL team to have their own stadium. So exciting!

Kendall Coyne Schofield

Kendall Coyne Schofield is an inspiration in women’s sports. She has medaled with and served as Captain of the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team, most recently in the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. Now, she adds being part-owner of the Chicago Red Stars.

Schofield is familiar with the Chicago sports scene, currently working as the first female Player Development Coach for the Chicago Blackhawks. Her dedication to the city through her investment in the club is evident and will, without a doubt, impact the league in a positive way!

We can all feel confident that these few but powerful names will inspire change and growth in the league. I foresee the list of incredible women investors growing throughout the NWSL, and I cannot wait to see who is next to join!
