It’s no secret that we love to see women supporting women, and right now, the pro soccer scene is full of that sentiment. The NWSL is backed by so many influential women; here are eight that you should know. 

 

Natalie Portman (Angel City)

It just feels right to start off this list with Natalie Portman. Not only is she an investor, she is one of the founders of Angel City FC. Portman is, of course, best known as an actress, but she’s also an outspoken advocate for children, animals, and women. She’s also a Harvard graduate. 

 

Naomi Osaka (NC Courage)

Naomi Osaka is one of the biggest names in tennis right now, and there is just something special about athletes supporting each other across the sports world. Osaka is the current number one in singles and has matched the record of a fellow NWSL investor and tennis legend, Serena Williams. Along with her tennis skills, Osaka is also an incredibly active and outspoken proponent for BLM and ending AAPI hate. 

 

Dr. Chelsea Clinton (Washington Spirit)

As a member of one of the most well-known political families in the world, it makes sense that Chelsea Clinton would put her money into Washington Spirit. Daughter of politicians Bill and Hillary Clinton, Chelsea has been in the public eye her entire life and has used that presence to focus on philanthropy, education, and progress. 

 

Jennifer Pritzker (Chicago Red Stars)

You might not know Jennifer Pritzker, but odds are you’ve stayed at one of her family’s hotels during a weekend tournament. Pritzker is one of the heirs to the Hyatt Hotel fortune and a former lieutenant colonel of the Army National Guard. Pritzker is the first transgender billionaire and has spent time and money funding organizations that promote trans visibility and education as well as the Reserves. 

 

America Ferrera (Angel City)

Hi Barbie! America Ferrera is among the influential women who helped build and back Angel City FC. Ferrera has been voted one of the most influential people/women in the world several times for her influence and activism. Ferrera has forever been an outspoken feminist, proud Latina, and voting activist. 

 

Brandi Chastain (Bay FC)

One of the biggest names in soccer history, Brandi Chastain, is one of the driving forces behind this new expansion team getting their moment. She, along with several other former USWNT players, started “NWSL to the Bay” to bring soccer to the Bay area. Chastain, of course, most well known for her incredible and iconic 1999 World Cup PK, is a legend and trailblazer in the soccer world. 

 

Brittany Mahomes (Kansas City Current)

A former soccer player herself, Brittany Mahomes went from playing in Iceland to owning a team in the NWSL. Mahomes was one of the original members of the ownership group that got KC Current off the ground. She, along with her husband, three-time Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has helped to fund the team’s training facility as well as the creation of a soccer-specific stadium just for the Current.
