Top 5 Goals: NWSL Regular Season Week 11 and USWNT at Olympics

While the USWNT could not succeed in their quest for Olympic Gold, a medal is still a possibility. As for the NWSL, itโ€™s done more than enough to make up for the disappointing loss with its own exciting action. This weekโ€™s list features goals from both competitions, with the NWSL having a bigger share of moments. So, without further ado, itโ€™s the best women’s soccer goals from the NWSL and USWNT at the Olympics.ย

5. Gabby Seiler – Houston Dash

Houstonโ€™s acquisition of Gabby Seiler is working out nicely for the organization. Considering she had never scored in the NWSL before and now has two in as many weeks is a huge boost. Set pieces are where Seiler has had her impact; in this case, she was in the right place at the right time. Once the ball came to her, she smashed it off the post and in with great technique. Seiler shows off her skills as a true tactician, which is great to see with her new team.ย

4. Trinity Rodman – Washington Spirit

No one has been able to stop the unstoppable force that is Trinity Rodman. Most teams seem to have a game plan to stop her, which is to put a body on her, get physical, and make it an ugly game. The problem that teams like the Chicago Red Stars have is doing that for a full 90 minutes. Then, just when you think you have her contained, she breaks free and punishes your defense with no mercy. Rodman picks the defender’s pocket and needs just two touches to beat everyone, making it look so easy in the process. Until someone can put a body on her, sheโ€™s going to continue dominating like this.ย

3. Sam Mewis – USWNT

The USWNT did not get past Canada but left everything on the field to defeat the Netherlands in the previous round. Lynn Williams goes from alternate to starting and providing an assist to Sam Mewis. It was a great turn and a nice driven cross into the box, but the adjustment that Sam Mewis makes is spectacular. Mewis was as brave as can be by just committing fully and diving right at this ball in traffic. When players are willing to sacrifice their bodies to make plays like that, itโ€™s one of the many things we love about the sportโ€”a beautiful header and cross, which helped the USWNT get to the semifinals.ย

2. Mallory Pugh – Chicago Red Stars

Mallory Pughโ€™s year of resurgence continues after scoring another goal for the Chicago Red Stars. This goal was a thing of beauty, and no one saw it coming. Four different defenders are in the vicinity of Pugh, but no one can get close enough to get her off the ball. Her body was almost going away from goal, and there wasnโ€™t a ton of power on the shot; however, the accuracy was perfect. The ball slid in to give Chicago their first lead of the game, and check out the celebration, surely a tribute to her boyfriend Dansby Swanson, who plays for the Atlanta Braves in professional baseball.ย ย

1. Eugenie Le Sommer- OL Reign

We are blessed to see a player of Eugenie Le Sommerโ€™s quality in the NWSL. Sheโ€™s always been known for her abilities, but now the American fans can see it up close. Unfortunately, this poor defender ended up having to taste turf after getting juked in such an embarrassing manner. Once Le Sommer cut back onto her right foot, everyone knew she would try and bend it into the far corner, and thatโ€™s exactly what happened. A perfectly placed curler to finish off the move and announce Le Sommerโ€™s arrival into the NWSL with style.ย
