During the international break this week, there were a handful of friendlies, including the USWNT v Colombia, Australia v Spain, and Canada v Korea. These games are performance indicators for some teams leading into the Euro or the CONCACAF Championships. Nonetheless, there are still some exciting updates out of the NWSL. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.
High of the Weekend
Kansas City’s new training complex is in operation finally! This is the first women’s soccer purpose-built training facility in the US. Investment in women’s soccer has been a long-standing issue for the league, but the Current’s endeavor shows the dedication for the team, the league, and the sport; it sets the tone for other teams.
Low of the Weekend

During the international break, Australia took on soccer powerhouse Spain. Spain won 7-0, with most of the goals coming in the second half. Many quickly criticized Australia’s coach, Tony Gustavsson, for going into the match way too defensively.
Australia’s team did have a pretty new look with many fresh faces and not a ton of the more experienced players. However, it’s still disappointing to see such a promising team get beaten 7-0.

The USWNT played Colombia on Saturday night in a friendly match, winning 3-0. Sophia Smith scored a brace, and Taylor Kornieck earned her first cap and scored her first goal! The US will play Colombia again on Tuesday.
It was good to see the USWNT succeed in the second half after a scoreless first half. Their change in formation definitely made up for the loss of some key players, such as Catarina Macario. Overall, it’ll be exciting to see how this new-looking team progresses.
Save of the Weekend
Bella Bixby took home this week’s NWSL Save of the Week honors during the Portland Thorns match against Orlando. The Thorns won that game 6-0, with Bixby keeping the clean sheet.

Taylor Kornieck is one for one on the USWNT! At the very tail end of the second half, Kornieck got on the end of a free-kick to put the USWNT up 3-0.
