It was a dark week in the world of women’s soccer. US Soccer’s commissioned investigation into the abuse of NWSL players was released last week. While we thought we knew a lot, the report showed just how pervasive the culture of abuse was. Even in the wake of this troubling news, women’s soccer needs unwavering support since that is the only way it will grow. With that being said, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news recap.

Jess Fishlock of OL Reign had an epic goal this past weekend in Wales’ friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her energy is contagious after the ball hits the back of the net. Wales won 1-0, and is one step closer to qualifying for the World Cup next summer!
Low of the Weekend
No goal.
VAR taketh away. https://t.co/cOB0PSNRcK

The USWNT lost their undefeated streak this past weekend in their friendly against England, sadly. It was an exciting match in a sold-out, electric Wembley Stadium.
One of the most debated calls was an offsides call where the US ended up scoring, thanks to VAR. The angle at which the VAR looked at the offsides made the call seem a little iffy, and for a beautiful equalizing goal by Trinity Rodman, we wished it counted. VAR also helped in awarding England a penalty goal.
It’ll be exciting to see what the USWNT can do in their next match against Spain, taking place on Tuesday.
News of the Weekend
As mentioned earlier, the Sally Yates report was released last week, and there has been a reeling week of fallout. We’re seeking accountability, which includes removing those who ignored the allegations in the first place. Thorns owners were fired, the Red Star’s owner has stepped down, and Gotham FC’s owner stepped back from decision-making.
Additionally, there’s been some criticism of the teams’ responses to the investigation, citing an ongoing independent investigation that is preventing them from saying more. However, the players at Racing Louisville took matters into their own hands and posted a statement urging their club to fully cooperate with investigators.

Carson Pickett is back for the USWNT! Sadly, Emily Fox is in concussion protocol after she left the pitch in the first half of the USWNT vs. England match, but Pickett has been called up as an addition.
