Top 5 Women’s Soccer Goals This Week: NCAA Soccer, England, France, Germany

NCAA Soccer has reached the end of the regular season, making for some incredible matches and goals in the conference tournaments. European soccer returned from the international break with some incredible matches as well. Let’s get into the best of the best with the top five women’s soccer goals of the Week from NCAA Soccer, the Barclays Women’s Super League and Championship, and D1 Arkema.

5. Maddie Mercado – Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame suffered a tough loss in the ACC Tournament against Clemson, but Maddie Mercado helped make it a classic with this goal. The striker drove forward, taking on multiple defenders, and glided past them easily.

Mercado saw her opening and went for it. The ball curled and flew into the far corner. It was a clean strike from one of the top players in the country. Maddie Mercado and Notre Dame are a team to be feared come tournament time.

4. Lena Oberdorf – VFL Wolfsburg

Lena Oberdorf is one of the most valuable players in the world for what she does as a defensive midfielder. Yet, she doesn’t get enough credit for her ability to get forward and score goals when the timing is right. A quick give n’ go with her teammate allowed the time to line up this long-range effort. Obderdorf’s technique is special; the midfielder strikes it with the outside of her boot, which is what makes it curl away from the keeper as it skips off the ground. Lena Oberdorf is an amazing player, and this goal certainly highlights that.

3. Jodie Hutton – Sheffield United

Jodie Hutton is a young star who came from Aston Villa’s Academy and moved to Sheffield United after stints with Aston Villa and Bristol City. Hutton showed why she’s a top-flight player who is looking to help Sheffield United come out of the Championship. Hutton didn’t even need a touch to shoot. She allowed herself to run onto the ball in space. Hutton caught the ball perfectly because the ball bent around the keeper’s outstretched hand and nestled into the top corner. Keep an eye on Jodie Hutton. She might have an England senior call-up in the future.

2. Ella Toone – Manchester United

Manchester United fans have to be hoping that they can keep Toone at the club forever. Whenever the team needs the goal in the big moment, Toole provides it, and she usually does it in style. Toone does really well to open her body up, but it can be tough to generate enough power with the strike on the same side. But that’s what makes Toone a great player. Her ability to finish from anywhere makes her an indispensable player for the Red Devils, adding this amazing goal to the highlight reel.

1. Eugenie Le Sommer – Lyon

Eugenie Le Sommer is one of the all-time greats of the women’s game. The striker’s catalog of goals could be put up against anyone, few could match her level of quality and consistency. Le Sommer takes one touch, up in the air, to get it over the shoulder of one defender. Still, the concentration and technique are sublime as she smashed it on the volley and into the top corner. It’s a jaw-dropping, stunning goal that has to take the No. 1 spot. It’ll be a sad day when Eugenie Le Sommer chooses to retire.
