In this week’s women’s soccer news, we saw a ton of exciting Olympic action, with the USWNT advancing to the semifinals and still on the hunt for a bit of redemption from the last World Cup. A legend made her return to the field with Angel City and one of the greatest players to ever do it still has a chance in the Olympics. Here’s what you need to know about women’s soccer this week.
High of the Weekend
The USWNT took on Japan in the Olympic quarterfinals, and had their work cut out for them because of Japan’s super-organized defense. The match remained scoreless and went into overtime. An incredible ball in from Crystal Dunn met the foot of Trinity Rodman, who beat her defender and took the shot to give the USWNT the 1-0 win.
Low of the Weekend

During the dying minutes of the USWNT’s quarterfinal match, Emily Fox suffered an injury to her knee and was taken out of the game. It’s tough to see a top defender go down with an injury, but all looks to be okay after she was seen in team training on August 5.
News of the Weekend
📰 #AngelCityFC announces the removal of star forward Christen Press from the NWSL season-ending injury list. Press, who was ACFC’s first-ever signing, is returning to the pitch 781 days after tearing her right ACL on June 11, 2022.

CP23 is BACK. The World Cup champion and legendary striker was taken off of the season ending injury list and placed on the active roster for Angel City’s Summer Cup match against San Diego. The match went to PKs, and Press ended up converting her penalty to help give Angel City the win.
Win of the Weekend
BRAZIL DO IT FOR MARTA 🇧🇷 pic.twitter.com/ScajqZuNn6
— The Women’s Game (@WomensGameMIB) August 3, 2024
Marta and Brazil’s Olympic dreams remain alive after Gabi Portilho scored the winning goal against France in their quarterfinal match! Marta was shown a red card in their match against Spain in the group stage, leaving her suspended for their first knockout stage game. Brazil barely scraped by in advancing from the group, coming in third place. But the team showed strength and resilience against France, fighting to give Marta a chance to play for the nation once again.
Game of the Weekend
There’s more Olympic women’s soccer to come, make sure to tune into the semifinal matches, when the USWNT vs. Germany and Brazil vs. Spain will both get rematches.
Player of the Weekend
Ann Katrin Berger pulled an Alyssa Naeher, meaning she came in clutch for her team during PKs against Canada. She stopped two and stepped up to take one, too, putting it away and helping Germany advance to the semifinals.
Debut of the Weekend
In July, the Kansas City Current traded for the Reign’s Alana Cook, and the defender just made her debut for the team!
What to Look Forward To
Outside of Olympic action, there are still Summer Cup games to watch! This week, Gotham will take on Angel City, and the Current will take on the Courage in semifinal matches.
