The only thing we love more than soccer is Socceristas in love! Many of these cute pairs have stood the test of time and prove that being rivals, or teammates, or going long-distance–or even being business partners–doesn’t get in the way. From across the pond to here in the NWSL, here are our top LGBTQ+ couples in the beautiful game.
Ann Katrin Berger and Jess Carter
One couple that proves playing together means staying together is German keeper Ann Katrin Berger and Gotham English Defender Jess Carter. The two met when Berger joined Birmingham City in 2016 and began dating the following year. They are now engaged and have transferred together to three separate teams—Birmingham, Chelsea, and now Gotham.
Tobin Heath and Christen Press
This one has been a long time coming, and we couldn’t kick off this list with a better love story. After years of secrecy and speculation, former USWNT teammates Christen Press and Tobin Heath confirmed their relationship. After the Paris Olympics, the couple declared to the world that they had been partners for 8 years.
Kelley O’Hara and Kameryn Stanhouse
Women’s soccer is kind of notorious for players dating other players, and that’s why we like Kelley O’Hara and her wife so much. This relationship was essentially hard launched with a kiss at the 2019 World Cup when O’Hara found Stanhouse in the stands post gold win. The two have been engaged since New Years Eve 2022, but no wedding bells just yet.
Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird
Talk about a power couple. Both titans in their respective sports, Megan Rapinoe and basketball legend Sue Bird, have been going strong since 2017. The next year, Bird and Rapinoe became the first same-sex couple to pose together on the Sports Illustrated Body Issue. They are now enjoying their retirement together via activism and podcasting.
Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis
Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis are a couple that knows how to create a viral moment, whether intentional or otherwise. First, it was the shot of Mewis comfortably Kerr after a hard loss, and now it’s the announcement of their first baby. The two have been together for four years and have been engaged for two.
Pernille Harder and Magdalena Eriksson
One of the most long-standing couples is also the most recently engaged. Pernille Harder and Magdalena Eriksson have been teammates and partners for ten years. Their relationship began in 2014 while they were playing together at Linköpings FC and have stuck together ever since, from Chelsea to their current team, Bayern Munich.
Tziarra King and Jess Fishlock
This one was a real whirlwind, and it was so fun to watch it unfold. Tziarra King and Jess Fishlock became teammates on Seattle Reign in 2021 when Fishlock was rumored to be dating Lauren Barnes. But shortly after becoming teammates King and Fishlock became girlfriends, and then fiancés in 2022 and wives in 2023 in a beautiful ceremony in Wales.
Alex Scott and Jess Glynne
We don’t get to see socceristas dating celebrities, so Alex Scott and Jess Glynne leave us a little star-struck. Scott had previously been in a relationship with a teammate, but she and British singer Glynne have been together since 2023.
Katrina “Mini” Gorry and Carla Markstedt
Matilda and West Ham player Katrina “Mini” Gorry and Swedish national and Vittsjö forward Carla Markstedt are the international couple. The two played together at Vittsjö and quickly began dating. They are currently engaged and just had their first son together in June, making Garry’s daughter a big sister.
Michelle Heyman and Christine Aldridge
Matilda’s Michelle Heyman and her partner Christine Aldridge are Instagram perfection. The two are always seen in the cutest settings, loving on each other with special guest appearances from their dog, Pablo. They actually secretly posted their engagement pictures in September and didn’t reveal that little Easter egg until they were already married in June.
