Ask Me Anything! With Sam Cary #7

Every week on our Instagram story we ask our Socceristas to submit questions to our content creator Sam Cary. Sam is a senior at the University of Iowa, where she is on the women’s soccer team. She is a Big Ten Champion, the team captain, and a 4x Academic All-Big Ten Honoree. Here are her responses to three of the questions you submitted. Check out the Instagram story every Monday to submit your questions to next week’s Ask Me Anything!

Q: What is your favorite song?

A: My sophomore year of high school, I was driving to my rivalry game with my mom, and “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas came on. We were both screaming the song at the top of our lungs on the way to the game, and we ended up winning. Call me superstitious, but before every soccer game since then, I have played that song. My mom and I send each other videos of us singing it, and for six years worth of soccer games, that tradition has lived on.

The soccer component, with the good memories it gives me, makes that my favorite song.

Q: What is your favorite part about soccer?

A: Soccer has been a factor in every part of my life, and I love so much about it. I love the people, the sounds of crisp passes, and the lessons it has taught me, but mostly I love the way it pushes me. Soccer gives me a space to continue to get better and push myself to be the best version of myself. There is always a new skill I can add to my game or something I can improve on, this keeps the game interesting and exciting at all times.

Through soccer, I have developed a work ethic that continues through the rest of my life. It has taught me that talent does not matter when you have passion and drive. It has taught me the joy of competing, no matter the result. There is nothing I would rather be doing than playing soccer, and I am grateful for it every day.

Q: How did Girls Soccer Network contact you?

A: I contacted them! I loved the mission of GSN and the work they do in the women’s soccer space, and I wanted to help. I saw places where I could add my insight as a current college player that has grown up through the game, and I had some time in my schedule, so I got to work. Now, I love working with them every day to keep pushing the mission forward.
