Ask Me Anything! with Sam Cary #8

Every week on our Instagram story, we ask our Socceristas to submit questions to our content creator Sam Cary. Sam is a senior at the University of Iowa, where she is on the women’s soccer team. She is a Big Ten Champion, the team captain, and a 4x Academic All-Big Ten Honoree. Here are her responses to three of the questions you submitted. Make sure to follow our Instagram and check out our weekly story to submit your questions for next week’s Ask Me Anything!

Q: What is your favorite pregame meal?

A: Once I got to college, I really started to value my pregame nutrition and what I put into my body before a game. It took me a few months to find “my right fit” for pregame meals, but now I eat the same food before every game.

I always have a large piece of salmon to have a good lighter protein in. I have a big portion of rice and some potatoes to get good carbs, and then I have some veggies to add some antioxidants and flavor. This has been my tradition for four years now, and it is something I live by.

Q: What is your favorite gameday snack?

A: One gamedays, my snack routine depends on the game time and my mood. I always try to have snacks on me because I never want to feel hungry; typically, these are my quick-carb snacks. I love to eat applesauce, goldfish, and pretzels. Additionally, I love to have a bottle filled with Skrach Super High Carb Mix before kick-off, and I am good to go.

My other little secret is before games I like to have a handful of gummy bears to get some quick sugar in my body:).

Q: How do you deal with injury recovery?

A: Take things one step at a time. When it comes to injury, I feel like it is really easy to look at the big goal of coming back on the field and get discouraged when that doesn’t happen right away. Consistency and winning small battles is the key when it comes to returning from injury. Take each moment and each challenge one step at a time, and good things will come. This is easier said than done, but it is good to keep in mind.
