Atlanta City FC has a name. It has a crest. It has colors.
There is just one thing missing: a team.
The NWSL’s newest expansion club will not play its first match until 2028. But that has not stopped Atlanta City FC from getting to work.
The club recently unveiled its name, crest and color palette, giving fans their first glimpse at what the newest NWSL team could become.
And perhaps more importantly, it is giving Atlanta something to rally around before there is even a roster to cheer for.
So, What Exactly Is Atlanta City FC?
The name is intentionally simple.
There is no mascot. No animal. No clever nickname.
Just Atlanta City FC.
The club wants the name to represent the entire city and the communities that make it what it is. That idea carries through the crest, which was designed to feel distinctly Atlanta.
At the center is a phoenix, representing Atlanta’s history of rebuilding and reinventing itself. The crest also includes Georgia’s state flower, the dogwood, along with roots representing the city’s history.
And if you look closely, there is even an “A” hidden within the design.
It is a lot to ask from a crest.
But Atlanta City FC is clearly trying to make sure its identity means something before its players ever step onto the field.
Peach, Red and a Little Bit of Fire
The color palette is just as intentional.
Atlanta City FC will use Atlanta Red, Georgia Peach, Platinum Metallic, Black Char and Dogwood White.
Atlanta Red represents passion and resilience. Georgia Peach brings in the state’s identity and sense of community. Platinum Metallic represents excellence and Atlanta’s influence, while Black Char symbolizes strength and transformation.
And Dogwood White? That one ties back to the dogwood blossom featured in the crest.
So, yes, there is a lot going on.
But that may be the point.
Atlanta City FC is not trying to create a brand that could belong anywhere. It wants fans to look at the crest and colors and immediately know where the team comes from.
The Interesting Part? Fans Are Already Part of It.
The club did not create its identity entirely behind closed doors.
Atlanta City FC gathered input from soccer supporters, Founding Members and local leaders while developing its name, crest and colors.
That matters because the club is trying to build something long before it has a full-time roster.
Community engagement is already part of the pitch.
Atlanta City FC says it wants to expand access to soccer, connect with the Atlanta community and inspire the next generation of athletes and fans.
That means the club is selling more than future match tickets.
It is selling the idea of belonging.
And that could be one of the most important pieces of building an NWSL team from scratch.
Two Years to Make Some Noise
Atlanta City FC will eventually share Mercedes-Benz Stadium with Atlanta United and the Falcons.
That is a massive stage.
But a massive stadium does not automatically create a women’s soccer culture.
The club has until 2028 to build one.
There will be players to sign, coaches to hire, kits to unveil and, eventually, a first game.
For now, though, Atlanta City FC is starting with something much less tangible: an identity.
A phoenix.
A dogwood.
Five colors.
And a city that has two years to decide what this team means to it.
The crest may be finished.
The real work is just beginning.
