How to Make the Most of Your First In-Person NWSL Game!

There is no better view than a soccer pitch at dusk under the bright lights. The quiet stillness of the field waiting for the players to run on… I get chills just picturing it in my mind.

Then the game begins, and the quiet turns into shouts from players and fans, claps and beating of drums from fan-led bands, whistles, and the loud announcer voice through the speakers. The atmosphere of a live soccer game is electric, and you soon find yourself absorbed by every single detail.

I’ve experienced this atmosphere before, mainly with varsity girls’ soccer and MLS games, but never had I ever been to an NWSL game in person! *Gasp* I know, what a tragedy indeed.

That was until the most recent Houston Dash vs. KC Current game. I am a huge fan of players on both teams, so of course, I had to be there. It was an awesome match, as all NWSL games are, but even more so because I got to cheer on my favorite team (Dash On!).

For those of you who have not attended a live NWSL game yet, I highly recommend doing so! Especially while we have some of the greatest names in women’s soccer playing in the league. If you are planning to go to an NWSL game in the near future, here are some suggestions to make your experience the utmost enjoyable.

Pick great seats!

Everyone has a seat preference- maybe you like sitting on the home side or right behind the goal. But for your first NWSL game, try selecting a spot where you have a great view of the entire field. It’s even better to choose a spot where the players are within feet of you! Seats right by a corner flag are a great choice for a view of the entire field and being nearby players kicking the ball in.

Arrive early/Stay late

Most, if not all, NWSL clubs love to give freebies before games. Sometimes the free swag is awesome, like a cap, shirt, or towel with the team logo on it. There is usually a limit on how many fans will receive freebies, so make sure to arrive early to score something nice! Additionally, some players like to meet fans after games, so staying behind after the game ends could give you a chance for a great selfie or autograph!

Embrace the atmosphere

Your experience at a soccer game is what you make of it, so you may as well make it fun! Partake in the wave, and don’t be afraid of showing up on the jumbotron! If your team has a slogan or chant, don’t be too shy to belt it out at the top of your lungs. It may seem silly, but cheering on your team is worth it.

Keep your eyes open for the stars

Leau Labonta

There is no shame when I say that I am a huge fangirl when it comes to NWSL players. Being able to see them playing within ten feet of you is honestly one of the most incredible experiences. At any point during the game, your favorite player could run right in front of you, so make sure you are paying attention, or you will miss them! (I was so close to Current captain Lo Labonta! Hey Lo Momma!)

Unfortunately, my favorite team lost, but it was ultimately still a win for me to be able to experience a great NWSL game in person! Don’t wait for next season to come around before deciding to go to a game. Pick two teams you’d love to see face-off against each other and get tickets now!
