Is Lyon the Women’s Super Team?

Lyon are busy cementing their claim to be the best women’s team of all time by annihilating rivals left, right and center this season. They have won a second consecutive Champions League title last season, while they have won France’s Division 1 Féminine League for 11 years in a row. Last season they won 21 out of 22 games in the league, but this time around they look like they could finish with a perfect 100% record. They have played 11 games in all competitions, scored 65 goals and conceded just twice. Both of those came against Paris, a game they won 9-2. Absurdly high scorelines like that have become commonplace at Lyon this season, as they beat Rodez 7-0 and Lille 6-0.

They have averaged 5.9 goals per game and strikers Ada Hegerberg and Eugenie Le Sommer are on fire. They topped the Division 1 Féminine League goal scoring charts last season with 20 goals apiece, in 22 games. They are on course to go far better than that this time around, as Hegerberg has already banged in 12 goals in eight games, while Le Sommer has nine. Hegerberg has just been named BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year and she is just 22 so she has a glittering future ahead of her. The world’s greatest stars, from Alex Morgan to Lucy Bronze, have headed to Lyon in recent years to represent a team widely considered the best in the world.

After winning the treble twice in a row, what else is there left for this team to do? Going an entire league season with a perfect 100% record would be another remarkable achievement and would cement their claims of greatness. Last season they won 21 and lost just once, to PSG. They are yet to face PSG this season, and that will be their sternest test. Not only did PSG beat them in the league, they gave Lyon an extremely tough battle in the Champions League final, with Lyon having to rely on a penalty shoot out to claim the famous trophy for the second year running. PSG have extremely deep pockets and they too have started brightly, with seven wins and a draw from eight games for this expensively assembled side.

Their showdown on December 10 could really set the tone for the season. PSG are the only team with realistic ambitions of preventing Lyon from making it four titles in a row. However, Lyon has not been a happy hunting ground for PSG as they lost 3-0 their last season and 7-0 the season before. Lyon will be supremely confident going into the game and really should win it. Best Sportsbooks will have odds on the incoming games, as Lyon really should win that match. They are heavy favorites to win the Champions League, the league and the domestic cup once again and complete a third consecutive treble, and you would not want to bet against them as they are in simply stunning form.

Lyon beat Kazygurt 7-0 in their last Champions League game, with Hegerberg scoring four times. That’s the sort of result that strikes fear into the rest of Europe. The best English and German teams simply cannot keep up with Lyon at present time. They are too technically gifted and will run rings around them. Fans can only hope for the advent of a FIFA World Club Cup competition so that Lyon can pit their wits against the very best teams in the United States. They might get a better game, but again you would not want to bet against this Lyon team.
