The W-League Finals are all set. Sydney FC are looking for their third straight title, but they will have to go through a very talented Melbourne City team first. There were plenty of great moments and goals from this playoff round. So let’s countdown the five best from this past weekend.
5. Tara Andrews- Newcastle Jets
Newcastle were down to 10 women, yet somehow they clawed their way back into the game. They waited a while, but Tara Andrews was the one who found the back of the net. The Jets managed to stay patient on this possession and made one extra pass to set up Andrews for the finish. The keeper will regret keeping the ball in play like that rather than attempting to hold onto it, but Sydney still found a way through.
4. Arin Gilliland- Newcastle Jets
The Jets desperately needed a lift after trailing by two goals and it was Arin Gilliland’s outstanding header that did it. The ball was beautifully whipped in on the corner kick. Gilliland was able to adjust midair, elevate over her defender, and somehow head the ball in on a tough angle. It was dramatic to say the least.
3. Lisa De Vanna- Sydney FC
It’s no secret just how good Lisa De Vanna is, especially when given the space to use her pace and run free. Newcastle were depleted in extra time due to a red card, which allowed center back and NWSL champ Emily Sonnett to go on a huge run. Sonnett waited until the last possible moment before finding De Vanna who slotted the ball home with a nice finish. That would be the goal that put them through to the final.
2. Caitlin Foord- Sydney FC
Caitlin Foord has been having a great season and is another young player with a bright future for the Matildas. She took on multiple defenders and no one could knick the ball off her. Foord cut left, then cut right before creating the space to slot the ball home. It was a brilliant solo effort and it came at the perfect time for Sydney.
1. Jessica Fishlock- Melbourne City FC
Jessica Fishlock has to be considered one of the best midfielders in the world. She’s known for scoring some rockets from outside the box. However, this goal had a little more finesse and it was enough to secure the victory for Melbourne City. Caitlin Foord provided a beautiful chip pass behind the defense and Fishlock did the rest with a wonderful dink over the keeper who just got her hands to it. The dangerous Melbourne City will look to continue their reign over the W-League and they’ve got a great chance to do it.
