The USWNT Dominates Canada in 3-1 Win

The USWNT ended their schedule for the year on a high note after they completed a two-game sweep of the Canadians this past weekend. The City of San Jose came out in full force to support the Stars and Stripes, and they were treated to a highly entertaining game. Jill Ellis only made two changes from the USA’s last matchup against Canada, adding Taylor Smith and Christen Press into the starting lineup.

The Canadians made multiple changes to their lineup including a spot in the starting lineup for Adriana Leon, who scored in the last game against the U.S. Canada, however, discovered early on that this game was going to be different. Jill Ellis and her team made the necessary adjustments and continued to put pressure on Canada. They would be rewarded on a world-class header from Julie Ertz, who can’t stop scoring from set pieces.

The Canadians would come back with a goal of their own to start the second half, but a mistake in their own half of the field would be their undoing. Christen Press continues to display how complete of a player she really is. She threaded the needle perfectly through multiple players to find Alex Morgan, who seamlessly nail a shot from outside the six-yard box.

The game would remain 2-1 until the 80th minute when substitute Carli Lloyd made her way onto the pitch. The two-time FIFA Player of the Year would find the back of the net after some great work on the wing from Megan Rapinoe. Rapinoe fired in a wicked cross that Morgan flicked across the box with her head, and Lloyd was there to smash it home. Lloyd has been in and out of the lineup recently and hasn’t had a big of impact as she would like. Hopefully that goal will lift her spirits as the USWNT enters the new year.

As the USWNT gears up for the 2019 World Cup in France, it’s great to see that these women have the ability to adapt and win games in a variety of ways. That’s exactly why Ellis has been experimenting so much with this team. They’re going to have to find different ways to beat teams of different styles. Keep up the great work ladies! Performances like this make it clear how ready this team is to repeat as World Cup champions.
