While many teams have had their moments in the sun, a few have established themselves as true dynasties, consistently reaching the sport’s ultimate stage and raising that championship trophy.
North Carolina Tar Heels

The undisputed queen of college soccer is the University of North Carolina. Their dominance is unparalleled, holding a record 23 NCAA Division I women’s soccer titles. There’s no sign of stopping the team either – the Tar Heels led the United Soccer Coaches pre-season NCAA poll.
Their run of success began in the very first NCAA Tournament in 1982 and continued with nine consecutive titles from 1986 to 1994. They have won championships in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2024.
USWNT legends have made up the Tar Heels’ roster. Players like Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, and Tisha Venturini were all integral parts of their championship teams in the 1990s. More recently, stars like Crystal Dunn helped them secure titles.
Florida State Seminoles

Coming in second behind UNC is Florida State, which has taken home four titles in 2014, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdóttir was a star on the 2014 team, while Jaelin Howell, Emily Madril, and Onyi Echegini were instrumental in their more recent championship runs.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish

While not on the same level as UNC, Notre Dame has a rich championship history of its own, with three NCAA titles. The Fighting Irish have been a consistent force in the women’s game, known for their tenacious play and strong team ethic. Notre Dame has won championships in 1995, 2004, and 2010. Their 1995 win marked the first time a team beat North Carolina in the championship game, ending UNC’s decade-long reign. They were runners-up in 1994, 1996, 1999, 2006, and 2008.
Stanford Cardinal

Stanford has emerged as a modern-day powerhouse, and currently stands at number seven on the pre-season NCAA poll. Like the Fighting Irish, they have secured three national championships and won in 2011, 2017, and 2019. Their teams have featured incredible talent, including Angel City’s Christen Press, who led the team to its first title in 2011. Catarina Macario, a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy winner, was also the key player during their 2017 and 2019 championship runs.
After a string of runner-up finishes in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Stanford finally broke through in 2011, a victory that cemented their place among the nation’s elite.
Portland Pilots

The University of Portland has also made a name for itself, having won two NCAA championships. The Pilots are known for their attacking style of play and have produced some of the most exciting players in the sport, including Christine Sinclair and Megan Rapinoe, both driving forces behind their 2002 and 2005 wins.
Other Programs
While UNC, Notre Dame, and Stanford stand out, other programs have also claimed multiple titles, contributing to the rich history of the NCAA tournament. Santa Clara has two titles, almost two decades apart – one in 2001, and another in 2020. The Florida Gators won two championships in 1998 and 2001, and the USC Trojans also have two titles, won in 2007 and 2016. Its rivals across the city, UCLA, also have two titles, in 2013 and 2022. These teams, along with others, have all left their mark on the NCAA women’s soccer landscape.
