FootyPop: Gotham Gets New Sponsor, Man City Wins League Cup Final

This week NJ/NY Gotham FC got a new sponsorship deal, the USWNT next friendlies were announced, Man City took home the Continental League Cup trophy, and some crazy goals were scored.

Additionally, our hopes and prayers are with the people of Ukraine. We know Ukrainian soccer leagues may fold, but we will continue to root for you and pray for your safety; we will rejoice when you step back onto the pitch.

Without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Week

Gotham secured a new front of jersey sponsor in a big deal with blockchain firm Algorand. In addition to the front of jersey spot, they’ll also provide NFTs for the club and players. It’s a first-of-its-kind sort of deal for the NWSL, and it’ll be interesting to see what they come up with this season.

Low of the Week

This past week Katie Meyer of Stanford University died. She is remembered as a wonderful teammate, friend, and daughter, and she had a profound impact on Stanford athletics and the soccer community. Teams from around the U.S., collegiate and professional, honored her legacy this past week.

News of the Week

U.S. Soccer announced the USWNT’s next matches that will be held on April 9 and 12. They’ll take on Uzbekistan for the first time in Columbus and Philadelphia. It’ll be the first time the USWNT plays at the new Lower.com Field in Columbus.

Manchester City beat Chelsea this weekend for the Continental League Cup final. Chelsea struck first with Sam Kerr scoring midway through the first half, but Manchester City quickly came back with force. Ultimately they won 3-1!

Goal of the Week

Katie McCabe scored an incredible volley from outside the box for Arsenal in their 4-0 win against Liverpool.

Win of the Week

Cindy Parlow Cone won the U.S. Soccer presidential election over Carlos Cordeiro. The victory will see Cone as president for the next four years. USWNT players publicly voiced their support of Cone’s election ahead of the voting. Cone being elected is pivotal for the USWNT and the future of U.S. Soccer.

Player of the Week

Scoring off a corner kick is nice, but when you do it twice in three minutes, that’s about as impressive as it gets. Katie Zelem did just that for Manchester United in their 4-0 win over Leicester, moving United into third place of the WSL standings.
