FootyPop: Stephanie Labbé Plays Her Final Match for Canada

This week there was an international break that put club teams on pause. However, the break didn’t stop Barcelona from making history again. Notably, the USWNT played Uzbekistan, New Zealand played Australia, and Canada played Nigeria. In addition, two of the USWNT’s new faces earned their first goals, while Ellen White scored a landmark goal for England. So, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Week

The NWSL’s two Californian expansion teams faced off in the Challenge Cup group stage on CBS before the international break. The match brought in 456,000 viewers, further supporting the demand for women’s soccer! In addition, the San Diego Wave picked up their first win in club history with their 4-2 win over Angel City. This comes just after the Barcelona vs. Real Madrid game brought in 91,553 people at Camp Nou for their Champions League matchup!

Low of the Week

Stephanie Labbé played her final game for Canada over the weekend. Labbé finishes her career as one of the best in Canadian history. It was a special moment to watch her check out of the game to a standing ovation in Vancouver, so although it is not exactly a low for the week, she is an incredible keeper who will surely be missed playing for her country.

News of the Week

After smashing the world record for the most-attended women’s club soccer game on March 30 against Real Madrid, FC Barcelona has announced another sellout. It’ll be a full house at Camp Nou when they take on Wolfsburg in the UEFA Women’s Championship League semi-final.

Goal of the Week

Jaelin Howell picked up her first international goal with an excellent finish in the USWNT’s 9-1 victory against Uzbekistan. Ashley Sanchez also picked up her first goal, and Sophia Smith had a hat-trick.

Player of the Week

Ellen White scored her 50th international goal for England, putting her just three behind Wayne Rooney for the most. The goal came in England’s 10-0 win in their friendly against North Macedonia.
