The Women Coaching at the Women’s World Cup

In the 2019 Women’s World Cup, only nine teams out of 24 were coached by women. This year there are 12. While this number is still less than half the coaches, it is important to acknowledge these amazing women taking the lead. Let’s introduce the women coaching at the Women’s World Cup!

 

Pia Sundhage – Brazil

Sundhage is the head coach of Brazil’s Women’s National. She was a former striker for the Swedish Women’s and a head coach as well. She additionally was the head coach of the USWNT from 2008 to 2012, where she won the 2012 FIFA World Coach of the Year.

 

Bev Priestman – Canada

Priestman was appointed as the head coach of the Canadian Women’s National Team in 2020. Before this, she had coached the U-17 and U-20 Canadian Teams, but she also had a role as an assistant coach for the England Women’s national team.

 

Shui Qingxia – China

Qingxia is a former midfielder for China and the current head coach for China’s Women’s national team. Before being head coach, she was appointed manager of the team and won a silver medal with the team as a player in 1996.

 

Sarina Weigman – England

Wiegman is a former Dutch national team member and played defense at the University of North Carolina. Additionally, she was the head coach of the Netherland Women’s national team. Currently, she is coaching the English Women’s national team.

 

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg – Germany

Voss-Tecklenburg is the head coach of the German Women’s national team and a former player. She played in three World Cups and was the Swiss Women’s National team coach in 2011.

 

Milena Bertolini – Italy

Bertolini is the head coach of the Italian Women’s national team and helped them qualify for the 2019 Women’s World Cup. She also played for the Italian Women’s national team and was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame.

 

Jitka Klimkova – New Zealand

In 2021, Klimkova was appointed as the head coach for New Zealand. Before this, she was a former player and coach for the Czech Republic.

 

Hege Riise – Norway

Riise is the current Norwegian Women’s national team head coach and a former player. On the team, she won the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the UEFA Women’s Euro. She recently received the position of head coach of the team in 2022.

 

Vera Pauw – Republic of Ireland

Pauw is a former Dutch player and current head coach of the Republic of Ireland, Women’s national team. She has played 89 internal matches with the Netherlands women’s national team and has coached internationally for the Netherlands and South Africa.

 

Desiree Ellis – South Africa

Ellis is a former South African women’s national team player and the current head coach. She was an ambassador for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and a soccer commentator as well.

 

Inka Grings – Switzerland

Grings is the current head coach for the Swiss women’s national team and a former German women’s national team striker. Growing up, she initially aimed to be a tennis player but found greater success as a soccer player. Grings also played with the Chicago Red Stars in 2013.
