The 17 US College Players in the World Cup

It’s World Cup time! This tournament has so many fresh faces that it’s hard to keep track. Look at some of the collegiate call-ups you’ll see in the game this summer.  

 

Chiara Singarella – South Alabama, Argentina

Singarella will be representing Argentina in this tournament. A Kennesaw State freshman Singarella is only in her freshman year. She has played on the U-20 and U-17 teams for Argentina. 

 

Simi Awujo – USC, Canada

Coming from USC, Simi Awujo will be playing for Canada. She plays midfield for the Trojans and is in her freshman year. Awujo appeared in every game of her first year and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. 

 

Olivia Smith – Penn State, Canada

The Nittany Lions will send Olivia Smith to play for Canada this summer. A freshman midfielder Smith has 16 caps for Penn State at midfield. Smith has played for Canada since she was 15 and is the youngest to ever debut for the country’s National Team. 

 

Genesis Perez-Watson – University of Central Florida, Costa Rica

A University of Central Florida goalkeeper, Genesis Perez-Watson, will play for Costa Rica. Perez-Watson is in her first year at UCF and has already played for Costa Rica’s National Team in U-17 and U-20. 

 

Josefine Hasbo – Harvard, Denmark

A junior at Harvard, Josefine Hasbo will continue her streak with the Danish National Team. A midfielder both at home and at college, Hasbo has racked up all kinds of accolades over her career. She is one of the youngest to be named to the Danish roster and has been named to the All-Ivy Second Team and First-Team All-Region. 

 

Milan Pierre-Jerome – George Mason, Haiti

In her final year at George Mason Milan Pierre-Jerome will be at midfield for Haiti. Pierre-Jerome is the team captain, and this will be her second World Cup, having played on the U-20 team in the last cup. 

 

Ruthny Mathurin – Mississippi State, Haiti

For Haiti, sophomore Ruthny Mathurin is a utility player from the University of Louisiana. Mathurin has been a member of the Haitian national team since 2017.

 

Lara Larco – Georgetown, Haiti

Keeper for Georgetown, Lara Larco, will join several players on this list representing Haiti. Larco is in her sophomore year at Georgetown and is the form team captain of Sunrise Prime FC ECNL. 

 

Peyton McNamara – Ohio State, Jamaica

At midfield, Peyton McNamara will be playing for Jamaica. An Ohio State senior, McNamara is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. 

 

Kameron Simmonds – Tennessee, Jamaica

From the University of Tennessee, Kameron Simmonds is a forward for Jamaica. This sophomore was sixth on her team in points during her freshman year. 

 

Kiki Van Zanten – Notre Dame, Jamaica

Now a grad student at Notre Dame, Kiki Van Zanten is another credit to the Jamaican team. At forward, Van Zanten has been named All-Region several times. 

 

Liya Brooks – Washington State, Jamaica

Washington State’s newest goalkeeper, Liya Brooks, will be playing for Jamaica in the cup. Brand new to the collegiate scene, we’re hoping to see what she’s got in this massive tournament. 

 

Gabi Rennie – ASU, New Zealand

Playing for one of the tournament’s host nations is Gabi Rennie at forward. This Kiwi forward started playing for the Arizona State University Sundevils in her junior year. 

 

Onyi Echegini – FSU, Nigeria

On the roster for Nigeria out of Florida State University is Onyi Echegini. Echegini is a senior playing at midfield for the Seminoles and was raised in England but plays for Nigeria because of her parents. 

 

Hilary Jaen – Jones County Junior College, Panama

Hilary Jaen is a freshman for Jones County Junior College as well as for the Panamanian National Team. 

 

Isabella Flanigan – West Virginia University, Philippines

At forward for West Virginia University, Isabella Flanigan will be playing for the Philippines. Flanigan debuted with the Philippines last year with the U-18 team, playing in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup and the AFF U-18 Women’s Championship.
