FootyPop: The San Diego Wave Signs a Rising Young Star

This past week was full of women’s soccer, with the Women’s African Cup of Nations reaching a conclusion and the Women’s EURO quarterfinals taking place. Additionally, the San Diego Wave signed a promising new player, Kansas City signed a French player, and much more. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

The San Diego Wave just signed Jaedyn Shaw at just 17 years old. Shaw is a midfielder out of Texas who Casey Stoney said has a bright future on the team. We’re excited to see what this young player can do!

Low of the Weekend

The Netherlands, the defending Women’s EURO champions, was just eliminated from the tournament in a 1-0 loss to France. They didn’t have the best performance even though they were expected to have a great run, partially due to the absence of star Vivianna Miedema at the start of the tournament. The game against France was much the same, a ton of defending and incredible saves. But, in the end, a penalty was the thing that stopped the game from heading to PKs. It was a good call, but still disappointing to see the reigning champs go down like this.

News of the Weekend

The USL W League named its champions! Tormenta FC, out of south Georgia, took home the title in the final match against the Minnesota Aurora FC. Tormenta FC won 2-1 in extra time of the game.

Fail of the Weekend

Germany beat Austria last week 2-0 in the Women’s EURO. Germany definitely showed as the better team, but until the last minute of the match, the scoreline was only 1-0. Austria tried to play out the back repeatedly in the match, with little success. Germany pressed hard on this goal kick, which resulted in this goal, unfortunately for Austria.

Win of the Weekend

South Africa takes home the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations championship title for the first time in history! South Africa beat host country Morocco 2-1 in the tournament’s final match.

Claire Lavogez recently signed to the KC Current. A midfielder player, Lavogez last played for FC Girondins de Bordeaux in France.

Goal of the Weekend

England beat Spain 2-1 in overtime during the Women’s EURO quarterfinals last week. Spain was up 1-0 until the end of the second half when Ella Toone took matters into her own hands and put one in the back of the net. Then, in the seventh minute of overtime, Georgia Stanway unleashed a cracking goal that sealed the deal for England. The stands were going crazy as England is the host country!
