The Quarterfinals of the 2022 Euros were incredible, to say the least. Each match featured intense drama with close scorelines and fantastic energy. This is what a competition like the Euro’s is all about, the best of the best from Europe coming together to truly prove who is the best. Let’s take a look at the best women’s soccer goals from the UEFA Women’s Championship Quarterfinal Round. 

5. Linda Sembrant – Sweden

Sweden were favored to beat Belgium in their quarterfinal matchup but the Belgians defended incredibly well for about 90 minutes. Then, just when it seemed like match was headed to extra time, the Swedes scored at the death to send the Belgians home.

Linda Sembrant was in the right place at the right time to clean up the mess after the initial corner kick. The keeper made a great initial save but unfortunately spilled it right in front of Sembrant. The defender displayed a striker’s finish with a calm tap-in into the roof of the net to send Sweden to the semifinals–a special moment for the Swedes.

Spain were just minutes away from taking out the hosts England in what was easily the best match of the quarterfinals. Esther Gonzalez did incredibly well to finish this chance, and it looked a lot simpler than it was. Her touch was almost too heavy at first but with the keeper and a defender covering the goal, Gonzalez only had one place she could put it. The far corner was open, but the shot had to be perfectly placed.

Gonzalez executed it to perfection and put England on their heels for the rest of the match. While it wasn’t enough, Spain proved they were still more than capable without Alexia Putellas, which speaks to how talented their team is overall.

The Germans didn’t have as much trouble defeating their opponent as the other semifinalists. The Austrians couldn’t muster enough chances to really threaten them.

This team goal is a thing of beauty because of how each action creates a chain that allows the next action to happen. First, Klara Bühl played in a ball with pace which forced the defenders to make a quick decision, then Alexandra Popp pulled off a nice dummy which freezes another defender in the box. That dummy allows all the time and space for Lina Magull to calmly slot the ball home.

With team soccer like this, it’s no surprise Germany is in the semifinals. 

 2. Ella Toone – England

England seemed dead and buried after being stymied by Spain for 89 minutes. Yet, with the crowd on their side, they never gave up and kept pushing forward. The clip shows seven forward passes, but there were 11 total passes to complete the entire move.

Ella Toone sent the crowd into full-blown pandemonium once she scored, enough to send chills down anyones spine while watching. This England squad seems like a team of destiny, it’s going to be very difficult to stop them in the semifinal, and Ella Toone will go down in history for scoring this goal.

Once Ella Toone scored, the momentum had clearly shifted in England’s favor. Georgia Stanway was able to carry that forward within the first extra time period. Lauren Hemp made a great run to shift defenders just enough to give Stanway the space she needed.

Everyone was taken by surprise when Stanway let that shot go from long distance including the goal keeper. It wasn’t perfecty located in the top corner but the keeper was positioned far enough to her left to not get across in time.

Still, the technique and power on the strike was more than enough to send England to the semifinals, what a surreal moment for England in the biggest of moments.
