This week in women’s soccer was a whirlwind, as has been the case for the month of August. The San Diego vs. Angel City game is set to make the NWSL attendance record, more woes come out of the Spirit, NCAA soccer is heating up, and more. Read about it all here in this week’s women’s soccer news recap:
High of the Weekend
The San Diego vs. Angel City game on September 17 almost has a sell-out crowd and is set to break the NWSL attendance with over 27,000 tickets sold already. The game will be played at San Diego’s brand new stadium Snapdragon Stadium. The Wave will be looking for revenge after going down 2-1 last time they met ACFC.
Low of the Weekend
England legends Ellen White and Jill Scott just announced their retirement. Both players had impressive careers, and to top it off, they both are 2022 Euro champions! Of course, we’ll miss them on the England WNT. But on a high note, Ebony Salmon of the Houston Dash was just called up for England’s September friendlies!
News of the Weekend

Washington Spirit coach Kris Ward was fired this past week because of an intense confrontation with a player. Although Ward had an interview with The Athletic stating, “If I could go back and handle it differently, I would.” Although Spirit player Andi Sullivan came out with a statement following it saying Wards’ recollection of events was inaccurate. The whole situation is disappointing to see after the Spirit’s not-so-great run this season and last year’s events with their previous coach, Richie Burke. We hope the Washington Spirit can bounce back again since we only want the best for these players.
Win of the Weekend

We have our U20 Women’s World Cup Champions! It’s Spain in a 3-1 win against Japan in the final. Spain was up three at the end of the first half, and Japan could only come back with one in the second half.
Save of the Weekend
Check out this epic save from the University of North Carolina this past weekend against Baylor. The UNC Tar Heels were already up 6-0 and sealed their clean sheet with this miraculous clearance.
Assist of the Weekend
Still not over this move from @mPinoe! pic.twitter.com/nqfHErO3Ir

Megan Rapinoe had an incredible weekend with her assist and goal for the Reign against Orlando. Her assist to Bethany Balcer is a video that we could watch again and again. The flick over Tymrak to settle the ball and then cross it is insane. GOAT status!
Player of the Weekend
Alex Morgan just furthered her status in the race for the Golden Boot this weekend. The assist from Taylor Kornshouldn’tdn’t be discounted either, though; her header to Morgan set her up perfectly to score her 13th of the season.
