FootyPop: NWSL Playoff Excitement and U17 USYNT Advancing to the World Cup Quarterfinals!

The USWNT might not have done as expected in the last two friendlies, but the u17 USYNT sure is showing out at the World Cup. The NWSL playoffs are underway, and NCAA women’s soccer is as exciting as ever. Check out this week’s women’s soccer news highlights.

High of the Weekend

The NWSL playoff quarterfinals took place this past weekend. Houston hosted Kansas City, and the San Diego Wave hosted the Chicago Red Stars. Kansas City took home the W after going ahead 2-1 in the 90+10’. In overtime, Alex Morgan scored for the Wave, advancing her team to the semifinals.

The match in Houston broke the attendance record for an NWSL playoff match. But it didn’t hold the record for long since the playoff game in San Diego took the title.

Low of the Weekend

The USWNT has a lot of work ahead of them, especially after losing 2-0 to Spain last week. Spain scored a couple of quality goals, but the USWNT defense was definitely lacking. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the team until next summer.

News of the Weekend

The 2022 NWSL Awards nominees were announced, and it’s going to be difficult to choose for a lot of the categories. But, not surprisingly, Naomi Girma was nominated for MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Defender of the Year.

Additionally, tonight, the Ballon d’Or winner will be named! Notably, Alex Morgan and Trinity Rodman were nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

Goal of the Weekend

This long-range goal was one of my favorites in the past week of NCAA soccer. Kaya Colbert takes one touch and then just launches it, finding the corner of the goal for USC against Cal Berkeley.

The U17 USYNT is killing it in India for the World Cup. They won 8-0 against the host country, tied 1-1 with Brazil, and just won 4-0 against Morrocco. This means they’ve advanced to the quarterfinals, which take place this weekend.

On Friday, No. 9 Stanford upset No. 1 UCLA’s perfect, undefeated season 1-0. The goal came late in the first half from one of Stanford’s defenders. The goal was devastating for the Bruins as the rest of the game, Stanford’s keeper was at the top of her game.
