In this week’s women’s soccer news, we got to see a lot of preseason action from the NWSL, including a goal from Angel City’s Alyssa Thompson, FIFA-related content across social media with the addition of the NWSL teams, some great goals, and saves, and big news out of the league regarding a new/old (however you want to look at it) team. Read on to learn about the past week’s women’s soccer news!
High of the Weekend
18-year-old @USWNT star Alyssa Thompson scored her first professional goal for @weareangelcity just 𝐅𝐈𝐕𝐄 minutes into her debut 🔥🇺🇸pic.twitter.com/J2Dv6cbpS7

Angel City FC took on Club América last week in a preseason friendly and came out on top 3-0. Alyssa Thompson scored her first goal in fantastic fashion in only the fifth minute of the match.
Her speed is going to be an invaluable asset to this team. We’ll be looking forward to more bright moments from Thompson.
Low of the Weekend
"We have been successful not because of our federation, but actually in spite of our federation"@janinebeckie and members of the Canadian women's soccer team take their fight for pay equity to Parliament @CBCNewshttps://t.co/t2bpwcf0yY pic.twitter.com/N1cU68m6rY

Canadian players, Janine Beckie, Christine Sinclair, Quinn, and Sophie Schmidt appeared in front of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage last week. They testified about budget issues and the inequality they’ve faced from Canada Soccer.
On the same day, Canada Soccer publicly released the details of the proposed collective bargaining agreement, which Janine Beckie stated should’ve stayed between the federation and the players.
News of the Weekend
A new era. A new look. pic.twitter.com/g8muu33PrF
— Utah Royals (@UtahRoyalsFC) March 12, 2023
Women’s soccer is back in Utah! The Utah Royals will return to the NWSL in 2024. Of course, what’s news in the NWSL without a little drama… many on Twitter are questioning the positioning of the Royals’ front-of-jersey sponsor: America First Credit Union. Quite the unfortunate name for a sponsor for a league that champions diversity and inclusion.
Fail of the Weekend
Canada Soccer’s post for International Women’s Day last week left something to be desired… to say the least. It was great they honored women in leadership positions, but without saying anything about the women’s national team players?
It seems a little absurd, considering all that the players are going through with the federation right now.
Win of the Weekend
Disney+ has announced that a new six-part documentary series titled "Matildas: The World at Our Feet" will premiere on April 26 this year! pic.twitter.com/b43ngnwN0H
— Samantha Lewis (@battledinosaur) March 7, 2023
The Matildas will be on the big screen! On April 26, a six-party docuseries following the Australian Women’s National Team will be available on Disney+. We’re finally receiving the women’s soccer tv content we deserve–a win for us and for the sport!
Save of the Weekend
Didi Haracic came up with this ridiculous save during Angel City’s preseason match. The Club America player is outside the box when she strikes the ball, and you can’t even tell how fast-paced the shot is until Haracic leaps up and barely get a tip over the crossbar. Great work for Angel City in just their first time playing together.
Assist of the Weekend
Lauren James is insane for this assist. She winds up and sends a perfect lofted ball over the top so Sam Kerr can volley it into the back of the net. Outstanding.

More and more team kits are getting released, and we’re excited to see the confirmation of the new Thorns away kit. It’s definitely out there… but its a good direction to head in after most teams opted for pretty dull secondary kits this year.

Midge Purce is a MOOD in her interview about her FIFA ratings. Check out all the NWSL team’s IG’s for a good laugh from their FIFA rating reveal vids.
