Top 5 Goals: Barclay’s FA WSL, Liberty A-League, Women’s FA Cup & Serie A Femminile

As we head into spring shortly, the women’s soccer calendar will only get busier. The NWSL is back soon, which means it’ll overlap with the end of the Barclays FA WSL, A-League, and all the other European leagues in action. With so many matches ongoing, there are a lot of great goals to keep track of. That’s exactly what we’re here for. So, it’s time for another edition of Top 5 Goals from the FA Continental Cup, Barclays FA WSL, Serie A Femminile, and Liberty A-League.

5. Sam Kerr – Chelsea

Sam Kerr is a gamer; she always shows up in the biggest games. The Continental Cup final against Arsenal would be no different.

Guro Reiten put in a teasing ball, begging to be hit, and Sam Kerr attacked it in the air with everything she had.

Naturally, Kerr headed it home emphatically to give Chelsea a dream start to the final. But, unfortunately, Chelsea would still come up short against Arsenal.

4. Rhianna Pollicina – Melbourne City

This was a brilliant piece of skill from Rhianna Pollicina, who showed off how good her footwork is.

All in one motion, within a matter of seconds, Pollicina did a complete 360 with the ball to shield herself from the defender, then took a quick touch and fired her shot over the outstretched arm of the keeper while falling away like taking a fadeaway jumper.

Most players don’t have the balance without at least falling to the ground after taking the shot. However, Pollicina had the elegance of a ballerina to score this goal, a brilliant finish from Rhianna Pollicina.

3. Rachel Rowe – Reading

When the ball fell into the path of Rachel Rowe, she only had one thought: to hit the ball as hard as she possibly could. Rowe had a split second to react and did not hesitate to pull the trigger. Because Rowe chose to go with power, the keeper was able to get a hand to it but would still be overwhelmed by the shot as it went in.

This is a great example of not wasting your chance when you have an opportunity to score, an emphatic finish from Emily Rowe.

2. Remy Siemsen – Leicester City

Remy Siemsen is one of Leicester’s new signings, and the Aussie starlet came through in a big way on her debut. It’s safe to say the club must be thrilled with their investment for the future when Siemsen can score goals like this.

Whether she’s right or left-footed, this strike is difficult to pull off, especially with a defender in the area. It’s all in the timing or Siemsen, who waited for the ball to bounce in front of her a second time before firing the shot past the keeper on the half-volley. It’s the only place Siemsen could have put the ball without it being saved, making the quality of this goal even better.

1. Beatrice Merlo – Inter Milan

Beatrice Merlo is an Italian left-back, but her goal to take this week’s top spot on the list made her look like a seasoned striker. Merlo found herself with plenty of space to run down the left flank and entered the box with relative ease.

The defender Merlo is facing likely assumes she will put the ball into the box for a cross. Once that defender gave Merlo more than enough space for the shot, Merlo knew she could take the shot from the edge of the box.

Her execution is sublime because her shot needed to have the bend to go around the defender and the power and accuracy to beat the keeper. Again that’s a left-back with a striker’s finish, a great goal to take the No. 1 spot in this week’s list.
