Top 5 Goals: FA Cup Final, Primera Iberdrola, NWSL Regular Season

Whether it’s 90,000+ attending a UEFA Champions’ league match or the FA Cup Final reaching 49,000+ in attendance, it’s clear that people care about women’s soccer. The atmosphere only adds to the quality of the matches, and the bigger the event is, the more the game will grow. This week’s goals are a prime example of magical moments created within an arena when a goal is scored.

Let’s look at the best women’s soccer goals from the FA Cup Final, NWSL Regular Season, and Primera Iberdrola in Spain.

5. Hayley Raso – Manchester City

Chelsea was minutes away from capturing the FA Cup trophy in regulation, but Hayley Raso had other ideas. With the game on the line and her team trailing, Raso made a darting run towards the edge of the box. Alex Greenwood played in an inch-perfect pass which Raso took off her shoulder/chest. The ball bounced right in front o the defender, and Raso let it rip as soon as she had the space and the ball flew into the far corner. It was a clutch goal from the Matildas star, but City still fell short in extra time.

4. Jessica McDonald – Racing Louisville

Jessica McDonald is filling her goalscoring role with Louisville to perfection. This is her second goal in as many weeks, and her versatility continues to be on display. On this occasion, J-Mac showed off her aerial skills with a textbook header, heading it back across where the keeper came from. Even if Jane Campbell made it all the way across, she still wasn’t saving this header. Jessica McDonald’s ability to finish more chances like these throughout the season will be huge for Racing Louisville’s success.

3. Amanda Sampedro – Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid was looking to spoil FC Barcelona’s perfect season, but a red card reducing them to 10 players didn’t help their cause. Amanda Sampedro scored a nice consolation goal by reacting the quickest and still showing great technique. The ball bounced up towards Sampedro, who had a defender right on her; on the one-time volley, she managed to keep her knee over the ball still and put her foot through it. This all happens in a split second, and Sampedro found the corner with a clean strike, a goal that provided a brief glimmer of hope.

2. Lauren Hemp – Manchester City

Manchester City showed just how resilient they were in the FA Cup Final against Chelsea. They trailed twice in regulation and came back both times to equalize. Lauren Hemp created something out of nothing; most players in that situation either lose the ball or force a corner kick. Hemp went even further and managed to find just enough daylight to go for an audacious curler. The execution was spot-on as Hemp’s shot gently nestled into the side netting, a goal that surely Lauren Hemp will savor scoring in an FA Cup Final.

1. Erin Cuthbert – Chelsea

Erin Cuthbert was named the Player of the Match for this goal, and rightfully so. If not for Hayley Raso, this would arguably be the greatest game-winner in Women’s FA Cup history. Cuthbert was alert and ready to come through for her team when they needed her. Once the Scottish international took a touch to settle herself, she let it go from more than 20 yards, and the ball rocketed off the crossbar and in. Cuthbert has always proven she’s capable of moments of brilliance like these but to do it in the FA Cup Final makes it all the more special.
