Top 5 Goals: NCAA Soccer, D1 Arkema & Supercoppa

Top 5 Goals is ready to take you around the world with goals from France, Italy, and NCAA Women’s Soccer. Whether it’s an amazing curled strike, a long-distance screamer, or a gorgeous free kick, there are so many ways to score an amazing goal. This week’s list is no different. We at GSN bring you another roundup of the best women’s soccer goals from NCAA Soccer, D1 Arkema, and Italian Supercoppa.

5. Gaetane Thiney – Paris FC

Gaetane Thiney featured briefly for Gotham FC and showed off her talent for half a season but would return to France. Thiney’s days for the national team might be behind her, but she’s still playing at a high level domestically.

Thiney does a great job of sizing up the defense and making a quick decision. Once she traps the ball and picks her head up, she immediately gets onto her right foot to attempt the curler. Her balance, football, and execution are top-notch. That’s a world-class player with incredible technique.

4. Jordan Brewster – West Virginia Mountaineers

This goal won West Virginia the Big 12 Tournament Championship, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. In a 0-0 match in overtime, Jordan Brewster lined up this free kick deep into her own half.

Normally a free kick like this is meant to be looped into the box for someone to try and redirect the ball toward goal. Instead, it seems like the wind got a hold of this ball while in the air because it kept flying toward the goal. The keeper has a tough choice to make. Does she come out to try and go after it or stay in her net? The keeper elected to stay and let the ball bounce–the danger is if you misjudge the bounce.

Because of the wind carrying that ball, it naturally took a wicked bounce off the turf, and the keeper had no chance after that. Absurd goal to witness, but West Virginia won’t complain one bit.

3. Lauren DeBeau – Michigan State Spartans

Lauren DeBeau has been a clutch player for the Spartans this season and came through for her team again. Michigan State might have lost the match in the end, but not because of DeBeau’s efforts.

Her awareness is top-notch. She never fully picks her head up but just knows where she is on the edge of the box. Once DeBeau had an inch of daylight to attempt the strike, she did, and with great success.

The ball flew off her foot and pinged off the post and in. DeBeau will be huge for Michigan State in the tournament, especially if they are to go on a big run.

2. Lisa Boattin – Juventus

Nine times out of ten, whoever takes a free kick from this position is putting it into the box as a cross. They would never even consider shooting. It takes tremendous technique and finesse to pull this goal off, and that’s exactly what Lisa Boattin has.

Based on the angle she takes on the ball and how it leaves her foot, you can tell she’s going for the goal. The ball smashed off the crossbar and in. The angle is so tight that Boattin had to make sure her accuracy was on point, and it was. That’s an amazing goal that not enough people are talking about this week.

1. Sammi Corcoran – Ball State Cardinals

Ball State’s season is sadly over, but this goal from Sammi Corcoran will be something the Cardinals should look back on fondly.

Corcoran was about 35 yards out when she took the shot but what’s interesting is the keeper isn’t totally out of position. She might be slightly off her line, but the margin for error for Corcoran to take this on is still low. Corcoran hit it just right as the ball dipped and swerved.

The keeper desperately throws her hand up at it but to no avail. This week, Sammi Corcoran takes the top spot on the list, thanks to a screamer from long range.
