Top 5 Goals: Europe and Liberty A-League

Itโ€™s truly a great time to be a womenโ€™s soccer fan, with Europe and Australia providing us with plenty of matches to enjoy. Week in and week out, we finally have the opportunity to keep up with the results and see how things are going in these leagues. Last year, it was difficult to watch games and keep up, but now everything is far more accessible thanks to Twitter. So, with that said, letโ€™s get into the best women’s soccer goals from Europe and the Liberty A-League.ย

5. Tiana Jaber – Newcastle Jets

As a defender, Tiana Jaber doesnโ€™t get forward often for the Newcastle Jets. But, every once in a while, a defender will come into attack when they have some extra space to operate and dribble.

Jaber came into the middle of the field and received the ball with only one player to beat. Jaber hit her defender with a nice shoulder dip and fake to open things up for her on her right foot.

Then Jaber let it rip, and the ball rocketed into the roof of the net. It was right above the keeper, but there was far too much power on the shot to keep it out, a scintillating strike from Tiana Jaber.ย

4. Alexia Putellas – FC Barcelona

While the FC Barcelona menโ€™s team continues to fall from grace, the womenโ€™s team is incredible in every way while embodying Barcaโ€™s ethos as a club. They play beautiful attacking football. They keep possession, and they pass so well. It’s beautiful to watch and must-see TV at this point.

This goal from Alexia Putellas shows the level of skill she has to go with the rest of her team. The ball comes back into the box, and Putellas takes one quick touch to control it and then doesnโ€™t even let it hit the ground before volleying the ball in. She made it look way too easy for how difficult this actually is to do in a game.

Barcelona could be the best team in Europe now, with Chelsea and Arsenal not too far behind.ย

3. Rhianna Pollicina – Melbourne City FC

This is surely the goal of the week in the A-League which means it has to make our top five list. Pollicina lined up this strike from the edge of the box with a defender close by. She took one touch with the outside of her right boot to clear space and get free from the defender along with setting her feet.

Once she was perfectly in rhythm to strike the ball, you can see what the result wasโ€“a perfect laser beam that flew into the top corner; the keeper had no chance. Rhianna Pollicina showed us all that we need to respect her technique and game a little bit more.ย ย

2. Athenea – Real Madridย

When looking at game-winners, it really doesnโ€™t get much better than this. Athenea is one of Spainโ€™s talented young stars, and she showed exactly why with this goal.

Once Athenea picks the ball up on the left flank and sees the defenderโ€™s positioning, she knows exactly what to do with it. A lightning-quick first step allows her to step inside and then go for the far corner with that beautifully curled finish off the post and in.

Sometimes when the game is deadlocked, you need a special moment to break the tie, and thatโ€™s exactly what Athenea provided with this goal.ย

1. Lieke Martens – FC Barcelona

Alexia Putellas was mentioned earlier for her sublime skill, and now we get to her teammate Lieke Martens who showed the same on this goal. Whenever Lieke Martens starts running at you with or without the ball, youโ€™re in trouble.

No defense in Europe can slow her down when she gets a full head of steam running at defenders. Martens receives the ball at exactly midfield before taking off with room to run. None of the defenders stepped to Martens in time, and the keeper, for whatever reason, is still off of her line.

For Martens to have the body control to run that fast and still hit a chip like this without breaking stride is ridiculous. Sheโ€™s one of the best in the world; thereโ€™s no mistake about that.ย
