The time is finally here! The World Cup starts this week, and it’s incredible how many NWSL players have been called up for their respective national teams! Sixteen different teams have NWSL representationโ€“that’s half! Not only are we excited to see all our favorite NWSL stars on the world stage, but it just points to the quality and growth of the league to have so much talent in this World Cup.

Christen Press is going through every athlete’s recovery nightmare. She just announced she’d be undergoing a fourth surgery on her knee. She tore her ACL last summer while playing for Angel City FC and has been going through a very, very long recovery process, made even longer by going through so many surgeries.ย

Press opened up on her Instagram about her emotions surrounding this news, especially how difficult it was to let go of her World Cup aspirations. Our thoughts are with her as she navigates through such a tough time physically and mentally!

News of the Weekendย

There were a couple more friendly matches this past week in preparation for the World Cup starting this week. Some were open to the media, while others were closed door. Ireland and Colombia were scheduled for a behind-closed-doors friendly, but it was canceled after twenty minutes because it became overly physical.ย

Star Irish midfielder Denise O’Sullivan was taken to the hospital after twenty minutes of play with an injury to her shin. Whether she’ll be available for Ireland’s first group stage match is still unknown.ย

It’s a shame that a friendly scrimmage resulted in an injury and was abandoned so early because of overly physical play, mainly because the tournament begins this week, and all we want to see is each team with healthy players!

Save of the Weekendย

Check out these saves from the goalkeepers for the Charlotte Eagles! The first save is immaculate, and the way she resets for the second one points to the quality talent that the WPSL is developing!

Team of the Weekendย

We have to shout out our very own USWNT, who won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs for their work toward achieving equal pay.

Additionally, Netflix announced that the USWNT will be the subject of a new sports docuseries!

Transfer of the Weekendย

Mia Fishel is headed to Chelsea! The former UCLA Bruin has been killing it in the Liga MX Femenil for Tigres. The move to the FA WSL is huge for developing talent, and we can’t wait to see what Fishel does there!

Chelsea has been making huge moves this transfer window after signing Catarina Macario and Ashley Lawrence already.

Upset of the Weekendย

Australia and France played a sold-out friendly match last week, and a goal from young star Mary Fowler gave Australia the 1-0 win. Australia could be one of the most underrated teams. They’ve quietly been building up to a point where they could feasibly beat any of the nine teams above them in the FIFA rankings.ย

However, during the match, Selma Bacha, a rising star for France, injured her ankle and was stretchered off the field.
