Claire Hutton’s Journey to Starting for the Kansas City Current
Claire Hutton is quickly becoming one of the biggest rookie names in the NWSL. At just 18 years old, she’s climbed her way up to become a starting player for the Kansas City Current. She’s had experience with the USYNT and looks to be one of the brightest up-and-coming midfielders right now. Here’s what you should know about Claire Hutton.
Youth Soccer Days
Before signing professionally, she played in the ECNL for the Albany Alleycats and World Class FC in her home state of New York. In high school, Hutton won two Section II championships for her varsity team. In her junior year, she also played for the boys’ varsity team.

Growing up, Hutton played as a midfielder for the USYNT. In her recent years with the international squad, she was part of the U17 National Team that won the 2022 CONCACAF Championship and was the captain of the U19 National Team in the 2023 PanAm games. This year, she received a call-up for the U-20 USYNT for their two friendlies against South Korea in June.
Signing Professionally
Hutton committed to playing collegiate soccer at UNC; however, she made the decision to forgo her college eligibility and sign professionally. The midfielder trained with various teams in the league including Gotham FC and the North Carolina Courage. Ultimately, she signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Current in December 2023 when she was just 17 years old.
Hutton made an immediate impact with the team, starting right away in the team’s first match of the season, and playing in all 11 matches so far. She boasts 31 successful tackles, the highest in the league.
Head Coach of the Kansas City Current and former USWNT Head Coach, Vlatko Andonovski, is incredibly excited to have Hutton on the team. “Obviously, she’s an incredible talent, incredible potential and, I have to say, she has exceeded our expectations so far,” said Andonovski, according to KSHB.

This is just the beginning of Hutton’s story with the strength and tactical promise she shows on the field. She is building chemistry with teammates and plays with a lot of maturity. Hutton’s journey with Kansas City Current has been one of the most successful rookie stories this season. Her next three years with the team will be exciting to follow.
