Emma Sears: The Forward’s Electric Start with the USWNT

Emma Sears has seen exponential growth this year, making an impact on the field for her NWSL team, Racing Louisville, and the USWNT. Most recently, Sears scored and assisted in her debut for the United States Women’s National Team, becoming the fourth to do so in the team’s history. Sears is just starting with the team but is already a name in the headlines.

Sears grew up in Dublin, Ohio, playing club soccer for Ohio Premier. She was also a part of the All-Ohio team during high school. Sears stayed in Ohio for college, playing for the Buckeyes, where she graduated in 2023 with a degree in Health Science. During her college career, she played outside forward and scored 25 goals with 15 assists. Sears has been ranked 12th in program history for goals for Ohio State and has helped lead them to four NCAA Tournament berths.

The following year after graduating, Sears was selected 28th during the second round of the 2024 NWSL draft. She was offered a one-year contract with Racing Louisville, which has now been extended through the 2026 season. Sears made an instant impact with Racing, starting twelve matches and playing nearly 1,500 minutes. She scored five goals and one assist throughout the regular season.

Sears’s first national call-up was in October against Iceland. She was subbed on in the 55th minute. She then assisted Lynn Williams and scored extra time in the second half. Three days later, Sears earned a starting position for the USWNT in their 3-0 win over Argentina.

After four years of playing with the Buckeyes, Sears decided to hang up her boots to focus on a career in nutrition. For six months, Sears halted playing soccer, yet less than a year later, she had become a well-rounded professional athlete. Growing up, Sears had never represented the USWNT at a youth level. Her untraditional path and hesitation about taking a professional route is truly a message to shoot for the stars. There is no one way to become a talented professional player. Sears’s recognition is much deserved after the hard work she has put in over the years of her soccer career. In her first year as a professional athlete, Sears is becoming a name every fan will know.
