In this week’s women’s soccer news, the Orlando Pride won the NWSL Shield; Angel City was handed a costly fine; the NWSL unveiled a new trophy; and more!
High of the Week
The Orlando Pride continued their stellar season by clinching the NWSL Shield with a 2-0 win over the Washington Spirit. Orlando has been flawless this season with a 17-0-6 record. With three regular-season games left to go, they look to be the first time in league history to go undefeated. It’s the first time the Pride has ever won the NWSL Shield.

Low of the Week
This week the NWSL announced that Angel City had been fined $200,000 and deducted three points after findings of salary cap violations during the 2023 season. It’s a massive punishment for a team that is fighting for a playoff spot with three games left to go in the season.

Win of the Week
Virginia Tech got their first-ever win against Florida State this weekend. The Hokies handed the No. 6 ranked Seminoles their second straight loss. Florida State had a 2-0 lead going into the final 10 minutes of the match but it took just eight minutes for Virginia Tech to score three goals to take the win.

Fail of the Week
The Houston Dash announced this week that head coach Fran Alonso would not return from his leave of absence. Alonso had been away from the team since June and it had become clear that he wasn’t likely to return so it’s puzzling that the parting of ways took so long. Houston is now without a general manager and a head coach with three games still to go in the 2024 season.

Team of the Week
NJ/NY Gotham has been having a lot of fun this week with their offense firing on all cylinders. Gotham had a midweek game taking on Frazsiers Whip in CONCACAF W Champions Cup play. They walked away with a big 13-0 win in that game. Just three days later they defeated Bay FC 5-1 in NWSL regular season play.
