It’s been a busy week in women’s soccer with Alex Morgan announcing her shocking retirement, the Orlando Pride clinching a playoff spot, and Magic Johnson joining the Washington Spirit ownership group as an investor. We look at some of this week’s news below!

The Washington Spirit announced that basketball legend, Magic Johnson, had joined their ownership group as an investor. Michele Kang joined Johnson on CBS Mornings to make the announcement. Johnson joins the list of celebrities that have invested in the NWSL. He was in attendance for the Spirit’s 2-1 win over the Portland Thorns and Trinity Rodman made sure to dunk for her goal celebration.

Croix Bethune will miss the remainder of the 2024 season with injury.

Unfortunately, Croix Bethune’s impressive rookie year has been cut short with her suffering a season-ending injury. The Washington Spirit announced this week that Bethune suffered a torn meniscus. The injury cut Bethune’s terrific season short but in just 17 games she tied the single-season assist record with 10.

Alex Morgan is hanging up her boots after a decorated career. The forward took to social media to announce that not only would the 2024 season be her last, but she’s expecting her second child, so her final soccer match was San Diego’s home match against the North Carolina Courage on September 8. Morgan started the contest but poetically came off the field for the final time in the 13th minute.
She finished her career having played in 150 NWSL games, with 63 appearances coming with her hometown team, San Diego Wave.

The Orlando Pride have taken the NWSL by storm this season, and this weekend, they became the first team to clinch a playoff spot. Orlando has been terrific this season and is sitting in first place with a 14-0-5 record. It’s the first time the Pride has made the playoffs since 2017.

Renée Guion scored an incredible Olimpico to help give the Carolina Ascent a 2-1 win over Fort Lauderdale United in the USL Super League.

Gotham is continuing to add players to their arsenal. This time, they picked up Cece Kizer. The forward was most recently with the Houston Dash but mutually parted ways with the club before finding herself with the reigning NWSL champs.
