FootyPop: The USWNT’s Next Generation Showed Out Against Colombia

In this week’s women’s soccer news, the USWNT found a result against Colombia, the NWSL was on pause for the international break but is gearing up for some exciting semifinal matchups, the search for a USWNT head coach is on, and much more. Keep on reading for our weekly WoSo news recap!

High of the Weekend

After a 0-0 draw against Colombia in the first friendly, the USWNT showed out in Sunday’s match, winning 3-0. With goals from Mia Fishel, Lindsay Horan, and Jaedyn Shaw, the USWNT had much more energy with a higher press.

The young players shined in their match. At one point, the front line’s average age was younger than 21. 19-year-old Jaedyn Shaw’s goal was particularly impressive as she was assisted by 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson, making this the first time two teenagers combined for a goal since 2001

The Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious award in soccer, added the women’s award in 2018. However, they still fail to schedule the award ceremony during a time when the nominees can even attend and enjoy the ceremony.

News of the Weekend

FIFA banned former Spanish soccer president Luis Rubiales from all soccer-related activities for three years after the scandal of him nonconsensually kissing player Jenni Hermoso following the Spanish women’s national team’s historic World Cup win.

Goal of the Weekend

Lindsay Horan’s goal for the US was so clean. She takes it off the volley, redirecting it so powerfully into the bottom corner.

Former USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski returns to coaching, as he just accepted the head coach position at the KC Current.

Additionally, sources say Angel City FC gave their interim coach, Becki Tweed, the permanent head coach position!

Team of the Weekend

The USWNT played much better in their second match against Colombia but are still looking for a permanent head coach. The search for a new USWNT head coach continues but could be coming towards completion. Juventus coach Joe Montemurro, OL Reign’s Laura Harvey, and the Matildas’ Tony Gustavsson are being looked at for the position, sources say.

The KC Current just made their youngest signing ever. Alex Pfeiffer is fifteen years and 338 days old, making her the fourth youngest player to play in the NWSL. Can’t wait to see her professional soccer journey unfold!

Upset of the Weekend

Iowa upset No. 12 Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. Iowa was seeded eighth, and Michigan State first. The two teams met a week prior, where the Spartans won 3-0 against the Hawkeyes. But Iowa returned with a vengeance, winning 1-0 and advancing in the tournament.

Congratulations to our “the BIG LIFE” podcast host, Sam Cary, on the win!
