In this week’s women’s soccer news, the USWNT is training for the Gold Cup, which begins this week, a young star signed a record-breaking deal with Nike, NWSL is in full preseason mode, and the action over in England in the FA WSL is getting hot! Keep on reading for the week’s WoSo news recap.
High of the Weekendย
The USWNT is gearing up for the Gold Cup, and they welcomed some guests to their training! Seeing Christen Press and Tobin Heath reunited with the team was amazing.ย
Low of the Weekend
So @GothamFC (2023 NWSL Champs) really made @FSUSoccer (2023 NCAA National Champs) delete the tweet with the final score lol.
Donโt be embarrassed, Gotham FC. FSU is elite. pic.twitter.com/Fij0XWt2Hk— ๐โถ TINA โณ SNOWโด๐ (@crystnadior) February 12, 2024
Gotham scrimmaged Florida State this past week and lost 3-2. But that’s not the low part. Gotham presumably asked FSU’s social media to take down the final score from their account. FSU, the NCAA Champion, is an elite team, and Gotham doesn’t need to try to hide the results of the match.
News of the Weekendย
Mckenna Whitham, a 13-year-old soccer star, is making waves as the youngest soccer playerโand youngest in any sportโto sign an NIL deal with Nike. Whitham has experience playing for the U15 USYNT. On the club level, she plays with Slammers FC and trains with some of the most elite coaches in the game.ย
Upset of the Weekendย
Over in England, Manchester City came out with a massive 1-0 over Chelsea, who are currently neck-a-neck in the standings. Khadija “Bunny” Shaw scored the goal just 14 minutes into the match, and Chelsea couldn’t catch up after that.ย
Player of the Weekendย
After announcing her retirement earlier this year, Sam Mewis will be the first inductee into the North Carolina Courage Ring of Honor. When she played with the Courage, she helped the team win three NWSL Shield wins and two NWSL Championships.ย
Team of the Weekendย
Arsenal sold out Emirates Stadium for a league match for the first time, with over 60k fans in attendance! The team took on Manchester United, winning 3-1.ย
