How the USWNT Symbolizes Independence

While celebrating the 4th of July, Iโ€™m sure weโ€™re all thinking about the upcoming World Cup and the show the USWNT is about to put on. Over the years, the USWNT has been an example of independence, power, and freedom like no other team. They have overcome adversity, blazed trails, and fought every good fight over the generations.ย

It all started with Michelle Akers, the original GOAT. Akers is the first goal scorer in the programโ€™s history. Sheโ€“literallyโ€“kicked it all off in 1985 at the USWNTโ€™s first-ever tournament. Akers was the first player to set so many records for the USWNT and really set the tone for what this team could be. She and this early team were powerful and unstoppable, tenacious and determined. Akers led the charge in the 1991 and 1999 World Cup tournaments and is a massive reason that the USWNT wears four stars on their chest.ย

That 1999 was the first team many began following today. This team had some of the most legendary players to ever lace up. Mia Hamm was the player every girl wanted to be. Kristine Lily had one of the longest tenures with the program. Briana Scurry was the keeper everyone was watching. But the woman who made the biggest mark on that already incredible tournament was Brandi Chastain.ย

It was Chastainโ€™s final penalty kick that clinched that highly coveted third gold World Cup medal for the USWNT. A feat in and of itself, Chastainโ€™s celebration sent shockwaves through the sports world. When Chastain tore her jersey off in the most unbridled moment of joy, she challenged the double standard between menโ€™s and womenโ€™s sports. She was fined for her celebration, which sparked a huge conversation that has carried over today and cemented her as one of the most iconic players of all time.ย

While Chastain may not have intended this moment to be an act of rebellion, it absolutely went down as one. And if there is one player in the history of USWNT who is the poster child for acts of rebellion, pushing the limits, and questioning the status quo, it is none other than Megan Rapinoe. While this squad has never shied away from a challenge, itโ€™s hard not to see Rapinoe as the ring leader. She has actively stoodโ€“and kneeledโ€“for causes that matter to her and to this nation. She was one of the main crusaders for equal and fair pay and is not afraid to kick butt on and off the pitch.ย

From the very beginning, the women named to this team have been pillars of this community and shining examples of the tenants the U.S. is known for. This long and illustrious history is still being built and carried on today by so many incredible women; itโ€™s a great summer to be a USWNT fan.ย ย
