How to Defend Like Naomi Girma

Naomi Girma is one of the most talented defenders we’ve seen come along in years, and that’s saying something, considering the legends we’ve had on the USWNT backline. In just two short years and as many major tournaments, Girma has quickly emerged as a leader on this team. We know that so many Socceristas are watching her play and thinking, “I want to be like her,” so here are some pointers on how to defend like Naomi Girma.

Speed

One of the core things about Girma is her speed. She is able to turn it on at exactly the right time to get between the ball and her mark. In the last two major tournaments, we have seen her go up against some of the fastest players in the world and come out on top almost every time. But she’s not in an all-out sprint at all times. Girma knows when to preserve her energy but always has another burst in the tank. Work on sprint intervals and other interval training techniques so you can master that essential defensive start/stop.

Patience

Going hand in hand with improving your speed and conditioning is the cerebral part of the game. Girma is always watching and waiting for her moment. She’s not relying on stabbing or making reckless tackles. There is a level-headedness to her game that makes her absolutely terrifying for strikers. She seems to know how her opponent will move before they do. This is where practice makes perfect. All of those back shuffling drills and 1v1 matchups in training are where you will learn to watch the ball rather than the body.

Touch

This seems to be Girma’s magical power. She has a first touch that is so precise and so sure that it’s usually the only one she needs. Whether she is settling a stray ball, stripping a defender, or putting a pass up the line, Girma’s touch is always certain. Working on your first touch is so important, especially in defense, where there is less room to make mistakes. Running through touch drills will help you figure out exactly where to connect with the ball no matter where it lands. This can look like anything from playing wall ball if you don’t have anyone to pass with or tossing yourself the ball to mimic an incoming kick.

Fun

Girma has said herself that she started playing this game because it was fun and she had the freedom to do what she wanted. There’s got to be something to that if she is who she is today. Don’t forget to keep being in love and finding joy in this sport, even as you’re on a journey to get better.

Girma is a natural and rare talent, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have to work hard, either. Even though she has some things that just can’t be taught, that doesn’t mean there’s no way to be great like her.
