Nadia Gomes’ Inspiring Journey Back To The NWSL

Nadia Gomes has had quite the professional journey, and it’s only just begun. From college soccer at BYU to taking five years away from the game, Gomes’ story is inspiring and filled with dedication and perseverance. We take a look at how the forward got to where she is today.

 

College Career

Gomes was born in Viseu, Portugal, but grew up in Sandy, Utah, and played collegiately at BYU from 2014-17. She finished her career at BYU with 23 goals and 23 assists, and in 2015, she received West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors. In her time at BYU, she helped lead the Cougars to a 54-19-10 record.

After her career at BYU, the Orlando Pride drafted her 23rd overall in the 2018 NWSL Draft. During the 2018 season, she spent time with the Pride as a national team replacement player, but she never made an appearance for Orlando. After the 2018 season, Gomes took time away from soccer and welcomed her first child in 2019.

Five years later, Gomes returned to the field with the San Francisco Glens for the 2023 USL W League season. She had a terrific season with San Francisco, scoring 17 goals and ten assists in 15 games, and was named W League National Player of the Year.

In January, the Chicago Red Stars’ announced Gomes to the preseason roster for the 2024 season. Before the start of the regular season, the Red Stars announced that they had signed Gomes to a one-year contract.

Gomes joins a Red Stars team that struggled offensively last season, and she will create a great attacking threat for Chicago. So far in the 2024 season, she’s started three games for Chicago. She’s helped lead the Red Stars to a great start with a 2-0-1 record.

In addition, she’s represented Portugal both at the youth stage and senior team. In 2014, she was part of Portugal’s UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship and helped lead them to a third-place finish. By 2018, she made her debut for the senior national team for the Algarve Cup. In 2023, she was called back into the national team after her impressive USL W League season.
