Hidden Gems of the NWSL Pt 2: Shining a Light on Players Who’ve Earned It

As the 2023 NWSL season nears a close, a few players will be highlighted with the NWSL awards and accolades. Parkside and GSN want to recognize a handful of players who also have earned MVP status in our eyes. Parkside has undertaken a commendable mission to bring these overlooked players to the forefront, showcasing them in their upcoming NWSL Collection Vol 2 Hobby Box, scheduled to debut at the end of this month. In collaboration with Parkside, we aim to illuminate the paths of these deserving athletes, sharing their unique stories and untapped potential. Here are five such players who have had an incredible 2023 season and played a huge role in their team’s success: 

 

1. Sarah Gorden #17 – Angel City FC

Sarah Gorden’s resurgence is nothing short of spectacular. After missing last season due to an ACL injury, she roared back, playing and starting all 23 games and logging an impressive 2,030 minutes. Her 100% passing distribution speaks volumes about her composure and skill on the field. Gorden’s exceptional performance didn’t go unnoticed, as she was rightfully selected to the NWSL Best XI for the month of July. With Angel City FC’s notable playoff run, we can’t help but wonder if a national team call-up is on the horizon for this remarkable talent.

2. Julie Doyle #20 – Orlando Pride

A versatile midfielder/forward for Orlando Pride, Doyle has been a driving force in her team’s attack. In 16 games, she started 11, and her two goals and three assists showcased her ability to challenge opponents and create goal-scoring opportunities. Her incredible performance, earning her the title of NWSL Player of the Week in July, reached its pinnacle when she recorded her first NWSL professional brace just 16 minutes into a match. Doyle’s role in delivering a decisive victory against OL Reign solidified her status as a key player in Orlando’s tenacious culture.

She marked a significant milestone in her 100th NWSL appearance, celebrated by her team. Notably, Doniak scored the game-winner against Gotham FC, displaying her knack for stepping up when it counts the most.

4. Veronica Latkso #24 – OL Reign

Her ability to seize crucial moments was evident when she scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute in a recent playoff match against Angel City, propelling OL Reign and Megan Rapinoe’s career to the semifinals.

Her dedication and personal development did not go unnoticed, leading to her re-signing with the NC Courage on a three-year contract.
