Love is in the air and it’s time to celebrate some of our favorite soccer-playing power couples! With Valentine’s Day getting closer we wanted to celebrate some of the amazing women’s soccer couples in the world. These couples slay on and off the field, either through activism, giving us examples of loving and supportive relationships, or just being too adorable together.
Julie Ertz and Zach Ertz
Julie Ertz, defender of the USWNT and the Chicago Red Stars, and Philadelphia Eagles tight end, Zach Ertz, tied the knot back in 2017 and it has been a nonstop flow of love and support ever since. As a true sports couple, these two know what it takes to make things work between travel, practice, and training. The two have even showcased their love and athleticism in a Visa commercial. And who can forget Julie’s overjoyed reaction to Zach making it to the Super Bowl in 2018, after the USWNT won the first game of their 2018 season?
Jordyn Huitema and Alphonso Davis
These Canadians may be super cool northerners but they could not be hotter off the pitch! Whether they’re playing for their clubs in Europe or repping the Great White North, the sky is the limit for this young power couple. Some added fun in their relationship? A forward and outside-back duo perhaps makes for some ideal training in the offseason.
Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach
Glennon Doyle, a mother, activist, and author, and Abby Wambach, a legend in the world of soccer, have a love story for the ages. Wambach and Doyle met in 2016, while Doyle was still married to her now ex-husband. And Wambach had only just announced her separation from her longtime girlfriend. By late fall of that same year, they announced their relationship, and by early 2017 they were engaged. They now live together in Naples, Florida with their three children and many causes. The couple are powerful activists for the LGBTQ+ community, women’s rights, and greet each other each morning with the phrase “coffee and revolution.”
Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris
U.S. Women’s National Team players Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris’ love story is nothing short of a modern fairytale. The couple, married in December 2019, met for the first time in 2010 at a USWNT training camp and instantly connected. First as friends and then as partners. In March 2019, the couple announced their relationship by publicly releasing their engagement photos. Their wedding was officiated by Sydney Leroux and had Megan Rapinoe as Harris’ maid of honor.
J.J. Watt and Kealia Ohai
Another duo of futbol and football pros, J.J. Watt, defensive end for the NFL’s Houston Texans, and Kealia Ohai of the Chicago Red Stars, announced their engagement on social media in May 2019. The couple have known each other for years, having met through Ohai’s brother-in-law, fellow Houston Texan, Brian Cushing. Watt and Ohai have seen each other through a ton of athletic adversity. Between Ohai’s season ending knee injury in 2017 and Watt’s hand, leg, and knee injuries from 2017 to now, the couple has always supported and encouraged one another to get back in the game.
Alex Morgan and Servando Carrasco
This couple has serious history. Even before they met and started dating at UC Berkeley, Carrasco and Morgan, a leader of the USWNT, were heading down the same path. Both dominating and earning accolades and coveted spots on teams and training programs. These two came up through the ranks together, from collegiate to pro and all around the world, and they’ve even started a family.
Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird
There probably aren’t many people left who don’t know the name Megan Rapinoe. But you might not know about her longtime girlfriend, Sue Bird, a point guard for the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. The couple began dating in 2016, shortly after meeting at the Rio 2016 Olympics. They’ve been each other’s support system ever since. In 2018 Bird and Rapinoe were the first same-sex couple to be featured on the cover of ESPN’s The Body Issue in the publication’s history. Rapinoe is often surrounded by political controversy, and Bird is right by her side through it all. She even wrote an op-ed about it for the Players’ Tribune during the 2019 World Cup.
Sydney Leroux and Dom Dwyer
Leroux of the Orland Pride and husband, Dom Dwyer, forward for Orlando City have created one of the most #goals worthy families in the sports world. You may know Sydney best for breaking the internet with that picture of her joining drills while pregnant. The couple have been together since 2014, married in 2015, and now have two children, son Cassius and daughter Roux. Both babies are mom and dad’s biggest fans and supporters, never far from the field. You know what they say, the family that plays together stays together!
There are, of course, so many more amazing couples in this beautiful sport, we just wanted to name a few. If your soccer OTP didn’t make it onto our list let us know about them in the comments!
