Female Investors Are Taking Over the NWSL – and We Love To See It

Angel City FC took the WoSo world by storm with their women-led investor group in 2020. Since then, the NWSL has seen more notable women take an interest in the league than ever before. While a coalition of top female investors and celebrities leads the Angel City FC, other women are getting involved throughout the league. These new investors boost not just their team but the entire NWSL.

Most of the time, investors stay behind the scenes and let their team take center stage. However, it’s impossible to ignore the star power Angel City FC’s investors bring to the organization. Natalie Portman, Jennifer Garner, Serena Williams, Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, and so many other prominent, talented, and inspirational women are at Angel City FC’s helm.

It’s no secret that sports are a male-dominated industry. Angel City FC’s investor group is changing that tune. They’ll fight for equal pay, bring notoriety to the NWSL, and change the way audiences view women’s soccer – and sports – at large.

The USWNT has shown (over and over) that they’re the best in the world on the field and deserve to be treated like it. Now, that change is needed off the pitch. Angel City FC’s ownership model is ushering in a new era of women’s sports, and they know it. Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams’ husband and Angel City FC investor, says it loud and proud on Twitter all the time: there is money to be made in women’s soccer.

Female Investors Throughout the League

While Angel City FC’s splashy arrival and star-studded roster of investors can’t be rivaled, powerful and influential women have invested in other NWSL teams. Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush Hager stepped up and became major inventors in the Washington Spirit. They join USWNT legend Briana Scurry, Dominique Dawes, and 22 other investors making a statement about the need for diversity in ownership. In Kansas City, NFL mega-star Patrick Mahomes and his fiancee Brittany Matthews invested in the new KC NWSL franchise.

Naomi Osaka invested in the NC Courage, stepping up to show cross-sport support. Osaka’s belief in the value of women’s soccer led to her decision to invest. But perhaps more than that, Osaka knows just how important it is to lift women up and build something great for future generations.

Everyone has a role to play in boosting women’s soccer. We need great players. We need people who will put money and time into growing and maintaining the sport. We need fans to show up and support their teams and help the league by boosting them on social media. Great things will happen when women lead in all parts of the beautiful game.
