So we all thought we’d be back on the field for sure by now, but 2020 didn’t go the way anyone expected. If you’re a Soccerista still stranded inside and tapping your cleats with impatience, we’ve got a few soccer movies (and TV shows) that will help curb your soccer craving.
Bend it Like Beckham
Disney+
A true classic, Bend it Like Beckham inspired an entire generation of Socceristas and it’s still a brilliant story. It’s a story of passion and friendship and overcoming every obstacle to pursue your dreams.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
HBO Max
While only one of these characters is a Soccerista, it’s still a must-watch. If you missed soccer camp this year you’ll definitely need to live vicariously through Blake Lively. Apart from soccer, it’s the ultimate friendship movie that will get you right in the feels.
The Kicks
Amazon
This series, based on Alex Morgan’s books, follows a young Soccerista who has to rise to the occasion and lead her new team to great heights. It’s a fun and scrappy show that will get you ready for team bonding and hard work.
Whip It
Starz
Full disclosure, this movie has absolutely nothing to do with soccer, but everything to do with girl power. This indie flick is all about roller derby and how an outcast becomes an all-star when she finds her passion for the sport. It’s a truly inspiring film with an exceptional cast of female characters.
Soccer in the City
Amazon
We are living in a time when education and outreach are more important than ever, so for our socially engaged Socceristas I highly recommend this documentary. It delves into soccer’s impact on the inner-cities of America, and how the world’s most beloved sport is viewed stateside.
Stick It
Available for digital rental and purchase through Amazon
Again, not a soccer film, but there are few movies that get me more hyped or make me want to hit the field more than Stick It. A gymnast who has fallen from grace gets thrown back into the world of competitive gymnastics and has to find a way to be herself in a sport full of strict rules. This movie has so many amazing one-liners, inspirational moments, and butt-kicking female athletes, it should be on every Soccerista’s list.
Back of the Net
Amazon and Netflix
For all of my Socceristas who are like me and always carry a book in their sports bag, this one is for you. When Cory accidentally gets on the bus to a soccer academy instead of her semester at sea, she has to use her smarts to learn the ins and outs of soccer on the fly. This is a cute quirky movie that’s perfect for watching on FaceTime with the team.
This is Football
Amazon
A short docuseries that talks about the history of soccer’s greatest teams, moments, and players. It’s a six-episode series that will give you insight into the sport’s legacy. I highly recommend episode two, which focuses on the Japanese Women’s National Team’s road to the World Cup victory after national devastation.
She’s the Man
Available for digital rental and purchase through Amazon
No list about must-watch girl’s soccer movies would be complete without this absolute masterpiece. She’s the Man is actually a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s comedy, Twelfth Night. It’s hilarious, fun, romantic, and chock-full of amazing soccer moments.
There are a lot of great soccer movies and shows out there, these are just a few. Hopefully, what we’ve laid out here will take you to some other great recommendations! Spend a little time binging content on your favorite sport until it’s safe to actually compete again.
