Love and Pride

Barbra Banda is the hattrick queen across domestic and international play, so sheโ€™s had a lot of celebrations. The newest addition to the Orlando Pride, she nodded to that in this goal against URFC in June when she kissed the Pride flag after scoring. Banda has had a year of ups and downs, so these moments of joy are important.ย

This isnโ€™t a goal celebration but a game celebration. After the heat, the USWNT took after the FIFA World Cup, there was tremendous pressure on them to show up at the Olympics. Coming up against Brazil was already a huge challenge on top of everything else they had come up against. Seeing everyone pile up and hug after that final whistle was pure joy.ย

Loโ€™eau LaBonita is the celebration queen. She broke the internet last year with her faux hamstring celey and this year she had another hit. In a game against Seattle Reign in June LaBonita and Hailie Mace celebrated Dirty Dancing style.ย

Gabi Nunes, for the Brazilian national team, had a sweet celebration with the bench. In their match against Nigeria, after sliding one past the keeper, Nunes headed straight for the bench and initiated a secret handshake with a fellow player.ย

This collegiate goal was a real beauty. Emily Gaebe of St Louis sent a shot off as she went down and in it went! To celebrate, she turned that foul into a backward somersault and popped right back up with joy.ย

Itโ€™s always so interesting to watch Japan play, especially at the Olympics. This goal by Kitagawa was a real beauty. She sent it sailing off a setpiece. After it went in Kitagawa had a really vulnerable moment and fell to the floor with a few sobs while her team crashed in around her.ย

Not all celebrations happen on the pitch. Some of the best from the Olympics were from the stands. Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, and Ali Krieger were all in attendance to watch the USWNT rise all the way to gold, soccer mom-ing all the way.ย

Hawa Cissoko transferred to AS Roma this year after four years with West Ham. During her debut she hit a nice little shot in from the line and sprinted straight into a celebration. She charged all the way to midfield and did a little step dance to her bench.ย

2024 was a great year for womenโ€™s soccer and these celebrations show off that joy perfectly.ย
