Top 5 Goals: NWSL Matchweek 9, Serie A Femminile & FA WSL

Europe’s domestic leagues have finally come to an end, which is bittersweet, to say the least. We’ll have to wait until the summer ends before our favorite European stars return, but now even more eyes will be on the NWSL for the rest of the season. Here’s the best of the best: the Top five Goals from the NWSL, Serie A Femminile, and FA WSL.

5. Leanne Kiernan – Liverpool

Leanne Kiernan certainly saved her best for last to end the season. The Irish international came off the bench for Liverpool against Leicester and scored a hat trick. This goal might be the best of the bunch. Kiernan showed the pace to beat out the defender to the ball, the skill to hit a quick turn and sit the defender down on the ground, and the calm finishing to beat the keeper near post. This is a high-level goal that Kiernan converted in a matter of seconds.

4. Savannah DeMelo – Racing Louisville

Kansas City has to be devastated to let two points slip from their fingers at home. The referee let play go on for five minutes past the eight added minutes of stoppage time. Savannah DeMelo took full advantage of the extra time given.

More than 100 minutes have been played, and everyone is exhausted, but the USWNT midfielder found a way to find another gear. As soon as she picked the ball up, she noticed the space she had and never stopped. Kansas City should’ve fouled to stop her, but no one had the awareness to do so, and DeMelo punished them. By the time she was in the box, it was over, and she stuck the ball in the far corner when it mattered most. Great players step up when the team needs them, and that’s what DeMelo is for Racing Louisville.

3. Sofia Cantore – Juventus

This is a sublime chip from Sofia Cantore who is sure to be a future star for Italy. To be running at almost full speed with a defender and goalie nearby and to try this chip is audacious, to say the least. It’s a situation where if you miss the chip, you look bad for trying, but if you convert, you look like a genius. In this case, Sofia Cantore looks like a genius for this special chip. It gave Juventus something to cheer for after missing out on the Serie A title.

2. Drew Spence – Tottenham Hotspur

The last goal of the season in the FA WSL was an absolute worldie from Drew Spence. Most players would try to bend the ball into the far post from this position, but Spence went for the far corner instead. The end result is a perfect strike. Spence managed to wrap her foot around the ball and nestle it into the top corner. Talk about the perfect goal to end the FA WSL season.

1. Emily Sams – Orlando Pride

Formerly known as Emily Madril, the defender has been a cornerstone for the Orlando Pride. Sams has emerged as one of the most reliable defenders in the NWSL. That’s what makes this goal special, she’s a defender but she scored her first career league goal as if she were a striker. Rarely will you see a center back watch the ball fall right at their feet outside of the box but Sams was ready. Sams got her hips around the ball and managed to hit that with her weaker foot into the far corner. That’s a stunning finish from a defender who looked like a striker.
