U.S. Player Report: How Are Tobin Heath and Catarina Macario Doing in Europe?

The NWSL season is winding down with the playoffs underway, but European leagues are in the middle of their seasons. While there aren’t currently many USWNT players playing in Europe we take a look at how the two that are have been doing so far this season with their respective clubs. Tobin Heath currently plays for Arsenal and Catarina Macario for Olympique Lyonnais. 

 

Tobin Heath – Arsenal

After spending seven seasons in the NWSL with the Portland Thorns, Tobin Heath made the move to England last season. The forward spent her first season in the FA WSL with Manchester United. Ahead of the 2021-22 season, she made the move to Arsenal joining a stacked roster. So far this season, the UNC alum has appeared in five total matches, three of which were WSL league matches. In her five appearances, she’s tallied one goal and two assists.  

In all competitions, Arsenal are 10-1 this season, their only loss coming to FC Barcelona. In those 11 matches, they have outscored their opponents 38-7 and have yet to be held scoreless in a match. In just league play, they have won their first five games and are currently sitting at the top of the WSL table with 15 points. 

Heath’s decision to move to Arsenal was backed by her love for the team ever since she was little. So, it’s great to see her making an impact on a team that she looked up to for so long.

 

Catarina Macario – Olympique Lyon

The youngster made a lot of news when she decided to forgo her senior year at Stanford and the NWSL to sign with the French juggernauts Olympique Lyon. Macario signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the club at the beginning of 2020. She joined a list of USWNT players that have suited up for Lyon, such as Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan. In her first season with the French side, she played in seven games and had five goals.

Macario has had an impressive start to her 2021-22 campaign with OL. In seven league appearances, she has tallied five goals and an assist. In her two Champions League appearances, she’s got two goals and an assist. She’s so dangerous around the ball and has proved that in France.

Lyon is 11-0 in all competitions and is currently tied with Paris St. Germain for first place in the Division 1 Féminine. In league play, Lyon has only conceded twice while they’ve scored 34 goals, cruising through their first seven games. OL is gearing up for an important game against PSG on November 13, a game that will have big implications for winning the league.

Overall Catarina Macario has shown consistency and dedication to Lyon. It’ll be exciting to see her future with the club and the USWNT.
