2021 has the potential to be another huge year for women’s soccer. After witnessing exponential growth in America thanks to the NWSL, the USWNT can build on that growth in 2021. Due to the pandemic, the Olympics were postponed to summer 2021. The competition is soon approaching, so what will that mean for the USWNT? Here’s what’s to come for the USWNT in 2021.
The pandemic makes it difficult for international teams to travel but if all goes according to plan, the USWNT should have the opportunity to get in some competitive games before the Olympics. This is what the USWNT 2021 looks like so far.
Jan. 18 and 22, two friendlies against Columbia following the USWNT 2021 January camp.
The following dates are the 2021 FIFA international windows, and when we can reasonably expect the USWNT to play:
Feb. 15-24 (She Believes Cup)
April 5-13 (2 matches)
June 6-16 (3 matches)
July 21-Aug. 6 (Olympics)
Sept. 13-21 (2 matches)
Oct. 18-26 (2 matches)
Nov. 22-Dec. 1 (3 matches)
Eight matches before the Olympics and seven matches after is a balanced slate of games. Keep in mind, this is the tentative schedule for the USWNT and is subject to change depending on the state of the pandemic. There’s been no official announcement on the She Believes Cup, and it would be a real shame if the competition couldn’t go forward because it is a crucial litmus test for the USWNT before the Olympics.
Based on travel restrictions and who the USWNT can actually play, they might not get to face the best competition. However, the USWNT camps throughout the year will also be a great chance for young players to make a case for themselves.
There are three different camps before the Olympics with the biggest one shortly arriving on January 9th. It’ll be a great opportunity for everyone to get back into game shape and shake off the rust from inactivity.
Lastly, the USWNT won’t compete for World Cup qualification until 2022. The Concacaf Women’s Nation League will also be kicking off soon, which means the USWNT will get even more action in the coming years. More matches for the USWNT means we’ll get to see them play more, which is what we all really want.
In the end, the USWNT has more than enough on its plate to get ready for the Olympics and beyond. The Gold Medal is certainly the biggest prize to look forward to.
