What Do You Get Out of Being a Utility Player? A LOT It Turns Out

“The state of being useful or beneficial.” This is the definition of utility according to the Oxford Languages Dictionary.

In soccer, the definition of ‘utility’ is not much different. A utility player is someone who plays multiple positions and plays them well. These skills can be very useful to the team.

There are several ways of looking at the utility player position in soccer. One might be that it’s not good because it doesn’t allow you to focus on one specific job. Another might be that it’s really great because it will enable you to expand your game knowledge, grow in multiple areas, learn more and become a more valuable player.

Let’s dive into the second one and look at what soccerista’s get out of being a utility player. Then you can choose if being a utility player is the right role for you. Here are some of the many reasons that being a utility player in soccer is a good thing:

Being a utility player means your coach trusts you

They have faith in your ability to step into different roles as needed, including last minute, without much preparation to cover for absences in key roles, injuries, etc. You are reliable, and that is awesome.

Being a utility player means your value is recognized

If you are playing several positions, that probably means you are skilled in many areas. Your coach recognizes and values all the work you’ve put into making your game well-rounded and adaptable.

Being a utility player helps you stay focused

When you are put into different roles every time you go on the field, you need to be someone who is focused and very aware. You need to always know what role you are currently playing and what your responsibilities are in this position.

Being a utility player helps you learn more about your strengths and weaknesses

Playing different positions puts you into different parts of the field and exposes you to the places you need improvement in each of them. This is great for players who love feedback and are growth-minded because it gives them the information they need to get even better.

Being a utility player gives you a better understanding of tactics

Learning each soccer position is key to understanding the game and excelling at elite levels. When you learn the role of each position, you become even more versatile and adaptable. Plus, you enhance your skill, game intelligence, and ability to play collectively with your teammates.

Being a utility player sometimes means you get extended minutes

When you are a reliable utility player, you are going to be the one your coach turns to when unforeseen circumstances arise, such as an injury to a teammate. In youth soccer, you can return to the field after subbing off. This probably means that you are the one who is going back on.

Being a utility player helps you get better at soccer

You get better at soccer because you have to do all the things we’ve just listed, all of which make you a stronger player. Utility players are also constantly being challenged, continually adapting, and constantly having to do new things. All of this makes you better at soccer.

Being a utility player has a lot of pros, and you get a lot out of it as a player. However, you’ll only get the benefits if you have the right mindset about it. You have to WANT, appreciate and love the role. Being a true, growth-minded student of the game is something that is necessary if you want to be a good utility player.

Many socceristas will naturally fall into this role, while others may want to consciously work toward changing their position and becoming a utility player. Whichever it may be, a healthy striving mentality and a mindset of progression are key to this role. Understanding that doing difficult and uncomfortable things is the path to greatness is a MUST for those who want to be utility players.
