I’m sure we’ve all seen Kelley O’Hara’s Retired USWNT Beep Test video by now–if you haven’t, open a new tab and check it out–it’s hilarious. And that silly video got us wondering about the lives these soccer baddies are living now that they’re off the pitch. Here is what some of your favorite retired USWNT players are up to. (Spoiler alert: get ready for a lot of podcast recommendations!)
Sam Mewis
Since her surprise retirement announcement in 2021, Mewis has hit the podcast circuit running. First, there was Snacks, her podcast with longtime best friend Lynn Williams, and now we have The Women’s Game. The Women’s Game is a podcast about women’s soccer by the people who know it best, Mewis and her Soccerista friends.
Megan Rapinoe
While Rapinoe is just as active in activism as she was during her playing days, Rapinoe’s primary focus at the moment is her podcast, A Touch More. Launched with her wife, basketball legend Sue Bird, back in August, this podcast focuses on women’s sports broadly but also throws some pop culture and news moments in there.
Alex Morgan
Morgan’s retirement came at the same time as another huge life announcement–she is expecting her second child. Baby #2 is due in March and is sure to keep Morgan busy, along with her five-year-old daughter, Charlie.
Abby Wambach
Abby Wambach may have retired a decade ago but will always be a USWNT favorite. Wambach has been co-hosting a podcast with her wife, Glennon Doyle, and Glennon’s sister, Amanda. Recently, she hosted Tim Walz and Cher on a podcast to talk about their fields and feelings.
Kelley O’Hara
One of our more recent retirees, O’Hara, has transitioned from footy to film. She is the executive producer of a queer short film called “Ripe!” that debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.
Julie Ertz
Ertz was part of the 2023 retirement class and has since gotten comfortable in her new life as a boy mom. Ertz welcomed twin sons to the family and made her first son, Madden, a big brother. She can almost always be spotted in the stands at her husband’s football games with the Washington Commanders.
Ali Krieger
Krieger’s retirement was embroiled in a lot of other stuff, but she went out on top as an NWSL champion. Now, she’s busy being a mom, repping great causes, and broadcasting for ESPN. She has also recently confirmed that she is dating someone she really likes but didn’t offer up any further details. We love to see her living her best life.
Becky Sauerbrunn
Sauerbrunn was one of the most stellar defensive players to ever lace up for the USWNT. Other than podcasting with Mewis, she has been flying under the radar since her announcement last season. But as a self-described book lover, we’re sure she’s getting through that long neglected TBR list.
Heather O’Reilly
O’Reilly retired from international play in 2016 and then from the game in 2019. She came back to the game abroad with Shelbourne in Ireland to complete her trophy shelf with a FAI Women’s Cup. In addition, she is currently a player-coach for NC Courage and has been key in organizing the women’s side of The Soccer Tournament.
