Coming into this season, one of the areas that the Orlando Pride was looking to improve was their backline. They added some strength and experience when they signed Amy Turner midway through the 2021 regular season. Amy Turner now starts at center back most games for the Pride. We take a look at how Turner landed with the Pride and her career so far.
Early Career
Turner started her professional career at the age of 16 in the FA Women’s Premier League with Doncaster. The English international then came to the United States to attend Hofstra University in 2009. While at Hofstra, she appeared in 41 matches and scored four goals for the team over the two years she played there. She worked her way up through the English women’s soccer landscape before landing in Orlando.
Before Orlando
After leaving Hofstra, Turner had stints with Leeds United and Sheffield before returning to the FA WSL with Notts County in 2014. She stayed with the club until they folded in 2017. She was an important player for the club, and after the 2015 season, she was named to the PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year shortlist.
In 2016, the defender suffered a bad knee injury that kept her from the game for over a year. After Notts County folded, Turner signed with Liverpool in 2017 but didn’t make her debut for the club until 2018 due to the injury. After spending a year and a half with Liverpool, she signed with Manchester United ahead of their inaugural season.
While at Manchester United, Turner made 67 appearances for the club between 2018-21. She also tallied four goals for the Red Devils while being an important piece of their backline.
Orlando Pride
The Sheffield, England native signed a two-year deal with an option of another season in June. Since joining the Pride midway through the NWSL season, the defender has appeared in 14 games, 12 of which have been starts.
Turner has an 83.8% success rate on her passes, which is higher than the team average and the highest of the defenders on the team. She’s been important for the improved Orlando backline this season. With only one game left of the season, the Pride has conceded 31 goals, the least since their first season in 2016.
It’ll be exciting to see if she stays with the Pride. She is a very capable center back and has come in and made a huge difference for the Pride’s backline.
